I think that if the performance AAA works like Transparent MS does on the Nvidia cards then it is working and you just don't notice it since it doesn't do that good of a job (negligible at best).
In somegames TRMS works well (Oblivion/Farcry come to mind) and in others, you need that extra TRSS to do the job (quality AAA).
Same thing happens on the Nvidia cards too so it may be something to do with the game engine but probably more to do with the MS portion of it and that it just doesn't do a good job at it (although on some transparent textures, TRMS does work in other source games, so now I'm confused
I don't have an ATI card so I could be wrong, just stating what I've experience with TRMS on Nvidia cards.
