Ok, I'm trying to impliment a backup/file server on my home network. I've got the hardware installed (windows XP Pro SP2), and the backup software is "Second Copy".

I'm trying to backup the "Documents and Settings" folder. I've getting this error here:

Picture of Error

I'm turned on sharing for this drive, but yet I still get the error. Can someone help me out?

*note* I've posted this in the network forum as well, but I need an answer fast since I'm working on this today and it really needs to get done. Thanks guys.

Its gonna be hard to do - on a workgroup, you'd need administrator privs to backup a remote machines documents and settings folder - your other option is to give that folder permissions to "Everyone" and cascade the changes, but then anyone will be able to access the documents.

give everyone full access to the "C" share. Just like WannaFly said.

Right click the folder > Permissions > Security Tab > Click on Everyone > check "Full Control" > Apply do this for the documents and settings folder

Full access is done how? I think I've done this already.

right click C drive, click properties, click sharing tab, click permissions button, make sure Everyone is in there, and all checkmark boxes are checked.

Click Tools from windows explorer, folder options, View tab, uncheck the simple file sharing checkbox.

you'll have to setup a local user account on the workstation, which should be the same user account you use to log on to the server. It should give you access to the workstation then.

Is that safe? Giving "everyone" full access to the "Documents and Settings" folder?

ok, thats what I thought. What the best way to do this, Klin?

Right Click My computer, click manage, click users and groups, right click user folder, create new user, make sure it's the exact same username that you're using to login the file server, same password, then click groups, click administrators, and add the new user to the administrators group.

If this is for home and he's behind a router, it doesn't matter. unless he's using a wireless router with no WEP encryption .

hrm, ok that seems to work so far KLin, now....I'm getting an access deny from Kristin's comp. I tried the same thing (view tab, turn off simple file sharing), but I cannot find it. Upon closer inspection, it looks like she has XP Home. Am I screwed? I really would like to get this backup synch working correctly.

XP home doesn't have advanced security features. I'm not really sure on how to do with with XP Home. I despise XP Home for this reason.

EDIT: I rarely use XP Home too, so that's why I don't know .

Do you have a mix of network protocols on each machine, Warcrow? Theoretically, it shouldn't make a difference but was getting similar errors a few weeks ago when I installed a backup server.

Come to find out, I had NetBEUI installed on one system, and TCP+NetBEUI on the other. Once I removed NetBUEI so TCP was the only protocol on both systems, it ran fine.

Well, I doubt that's the problem, as you have to install NetBEUI manually.

Just go under Control Panel --> Network Settings --> Your LAN --> Properties, and make sure that TCP/IP is the only protocol installed. If you have others like NetBEUI, etc., just uncheck them for the time being and see if that makes a difference.

Yea, its not. I just checked. What I can do, is access the file server from her desktop. What I'm going to do is just install the backup software on her comp and push the files to the backup server. She has access to it and its working now.

THANKS TO ALL WHO HELPED, ESPECIALLY KLin!
