If you guys can't help me figure this out, no one can. Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Here is the situation:

My son's friend brought his computer to me and said he had a dead MOBO and asked if I could look at it for him. It was an off the shelf Acer about a year old. It came with an Athalon 64 x2 with 1GB of RAM. He had since added 2 more GB of ram and a 16x pcie 512 mb video card. He used this configuration for a few months without issue. He brought it over and when I turned on the computer you would get the Acer logo screen and thats it. Could not go anywhere from there. We tried everything. No keyboard, no post, nothing. We changed ram, we tried another power supply (because his stock one was only 300watts and I figured with all that ram and video it may have killed it). I searched online and found others had a similar problem and required a mobo replacement. So I suggested he order another mobo and he does. He did not order a stock replacement but an MSI (open box) from Newegg. We check and make sure that it will be correct for his processor and it is. He brings it back over we install the processor, hook everything up properly and nothing! Nothing at all! No lights, no beeps, no fans, Nothing!

So what do you guys think? Is this a second bad mobo? Is the processor bad? Would anything on the computer work, i.e. turn on, spin, light up, if the processor was no good? Is there a way to test mobo?

Waiting patiently for your informed responses.

get a multimeter out and manually test the PSU.

also, did you verify that the old ram is compatible with the new motherboard?

robisbell, we tried another PSU. It was a 500W psu. Old ram is compatible with mobo but even it was not wouldn't the mobo beep loudly like they usually do? Also if the ram is bad the fans will still spin and there will be signs of life, correct?

jackschmittusa, we tried it with no cards or drives at all. What do you mean, bench test? Is there something I can do to see if the mobo is working?

okay, I'd still test them manually, to be sure.

not necessarily if the ram is not compatible, will it beep.the incompatible ram will not affect fans running, but to get more into it
I'll need exact model number of the ram, psu(s), and motherboard and video card.

Stock answer: Disconnect power. Reseat CPU and power cables, remove everything else. Check jumpers. Connect only power button. Remove 3V battery and short-circuit the contacts. Press power button. Replace battery. Add one stick of working memory into 1st slot (closest to the CPU). Install graphics. Try to boot.

****Update****

Thanks guys for your help. We went out and got another mobo. Hooked everything up and it worked fine. I guess 2 bad mobo's in a row is just bad luck! I guess I had trouble believing that it was possible.
