Made by a decent manufacturer, and easy to download music to it. I need something really simple to use, and sounds great. Something around or above 4 gigs and flash based. Hook it up! Suggestions pleeeeze!

Won't need itunes either. Works with a default Windows XP install. Are they allowed to bring their own PC? Or install software on Gov't PCs?

Whats easier than drag and drop music files? You plug the sansa in and its detected as a removable drive.

Only shortcoming might be the charger. Unless, they've come out with a standalone one. They even have an 8gb model.

Why don't you buy your bud a body armour that actually stops bullets.

I would strongly advise against any iPod because they require proprietary iTunes software in order for them to work. Chances are that if he'll want to update his music library not many computers over there are going to have iTunes installed. That and connecting new iPod to iTunes is not problem free either.

I'd recommend iAudio 6, but that's hdd based, so the best choices are probably iAudio 5, iAudio U3 or as ppl said above SanDisk Sansa.

the Ipod sucks, imagine if the guy lost his cord? good luck finding a store that sells ipod connectors in baghdad, or elsewhere in that cesspool.

I'd imagine it would be alot easier to get generic usb --> mini usb.

I liked my Rio Carbon, anything other than an ipod. It'd get scratched to ****** in that sand too.

They're at the PX...there's a whole aisle of Ipod accessories...

he will have access to a lappy to load and manipulate it. He needs something drag and drop simple. we are talkin about a dude that can tear down a 60 and set it back up quick. i need something that will last on the batteries, and its not a freakin ipod nano. i hate itunes, so im sure he will to. i have the sansa 2 gigger, and i love mine, but i wasnt sure if there was a better one out now. if its still the same old sansa, he will be happy with that.

Last I heard, they're not allowed to use third-party body armor anymore.

For the MP3 player, I'd recommend the 4GB Nano as well.

I have a feeling that that's kinda skipped over. My work pulled together a purchased body armour for one of our guys who went to both Afghanistan and Iraq. Nobody gave him any problems about it. Good thing too because it certainly did save his life from an IED.

Anyway, I'd definitely steer away from anything iPod over there. Like someone else said, what's he gonna do if he loses the chord, or it gets trashed? Atleast he'll have a better chance finding a replacement mini-usb cable.

I feel the need to take two pictures tomorrow:

1) The body armor we actually, no kidding, use. Find a spot where you think there needs to be more armor. Don't forget that we still have to walk with these things on. Besides the chest and shoulders being covered, there is also extra protection for the neck, throat, shoulders and upper arms, sides (not sure what that part of the body is called but from the armpit to the waist), and groin.

If your friend had special armor such that it saved his life, what extra parts did it cover?

2) The selection at the on-base PX and the on-base bazaar. Mind you, we also have access to the internet (I'm being totally serious!) and items from stores like Newegg usually get here in around 8 days.
