I recently switched over to a 6600gt. I had no problems with it. Played HL2 like a champ. But then I formatted and reinstalled HL2. Now in general my computer seems to be slowing down, but HL2 was just painful. After lowering all the settings I finally got the game to play, but then it started doing this:

1
2
3

I tried testing it with futuremark, but my rig crashed while it was running. I can't see anything that is sucking memory or anything off my cpu. I could use a little help here.

System specs:
xp2600+
asus A7N8X
1 gig Mushkin RAM
120 gig WD
Rosewill 550 watt PSU

UPDATE: it turns out it was just the copy of HL2 I downloaded from Steam. I installed it from cd and it worked great. Thanks for all your help.

those lines are the mathematical shadow and shader calculations the 6600gt must perform to make it look like a real game. but not a good sign, you might want to reinstall windows, it could have been the format did something with drivers.

I reinstalled the drivers after the format. Maybe I should try some different drivers????

What drivers are you using on the 6600gt?
2. Do you still have your old vid card and was it able to play HL2, if so you may want to try it. Narrow down where the fault is.

no, I dont have the old card still. I am using the latest forceware drivers, 71.84.

EDIT: tried new drivers, did not work.

Any other tips?

How is that fan on the card.

Had this happen and the system would crawl.

no noises, and I made sure it is spinning. I haven't even OC'd this guy yet. I am going to install a couple other games and report back.

dude, 71.89 is the latest.

l had same problem in medal of honor , it turned out after windows re install driver re install and game re install that it was still happening and was related in the end to the shader tech, l at the time had put a 9800 pro in it , it had an fx5600, never found specific problem but maybe fiddle with bit lighting shading , aa and af, at your desktop.
