The combo arrived at 1 PM today so I've had more time with it than I expected :)
Early preliminary results ARE VERY promising.

The cpu default voltage is 1.5245
To overclock to the present level the voltage is 1.60 ;)

The CPU P4 2.4C 800 Mhz FSB
As you can see thats an SL6WF.
Also of note is this is what the cpu looked like right out of the box. It was in original packaging and sealed. You can see that this cpu had been tested in the plant it was made, you can partially see where they cleaned off some thermal paste.

The current overclock. As seen from WCPUID and SiSoft Sandra
Interesting to say the least as this is with air cooling!!! I'm using a Alpha PAL 8942.
Amazing stuff! A 900Mhz overclock.

For those who want to see a 3D Mark 2001 SE benchmark 19062

I haven't added the 3D Mark 2003 scores yet as I can't seem to beat my AMD 2500+ score of 6100.
Presently with this combo I'm only getting at 5950 to 5980 each time I try. I was expecting a very good increase. I'll keep tweaking it :)

There is something I would like to say about this cpu. When you are working on something or you are playing a game the "feel" of everything is smoother.
The word I would like to say is "slick", but that might only make sense to me.
Cool stuff people. This is a very good combo and a really good value for the bucks!

nice
3dmark03 isnt going up cuz i heard its a bit more vidcard dependent...
for me, a raise of like 4k 3dmark2001se points du to raising fsb from 133 to 200 only yielded a maybe 400 3dmark03 point increase..

but i dunno
still nice oc :)
how are temps?

Im rootin Fer ya Silverback!

Now I'm going to be getting almost the same thing as SilverBack. IC7 & 2.4c Retail but with 512 x 2 Kingston HyperX PC3500 & Radeon 9500 Pro.

I know I can prolly get to 3Ghz with the Intel HSF combo (and Arctic Silver 3, instead of the Thermal Pad), but does anyone think to get to 3.2+ I'd need to get a 3rd party HSF combo?

And does anyone think, that if I didnt need the Intel HSF combo, that someone would want to buy it on eBay or something?

One last thing and yes, this is prolly a stupid question, but I'm kinda new again to the O'C thing. By using the FSB divider, doesnt that decrease memory bandwith so I can get a higher CPU speed?

Thanks

I bet if you used the 3:2 memory ratio you would probably get an even high overclock that is unless you are already using that, but I bet it is the 5:4 ratio.

I'm using Corsair XMS3200 2x512
I'm running it at a 5:4 ratio. It's not the ram holding me back now, but heat.
I've been considering hopping on the koolance bandwagon.

A 3:2 ratio would be a drastic loss in performance. It's really meant for PC2700 memory.

The memory right now is running at 220 Mhz at 2.5.2.2
The FSB is a quad pumped 275 or 1100 Mhz.
The cpu right now is running at 54C

There doesn't seem to be any issues at that temp either :)

As far as overclocking the chip.
If you have 400Mhz DDR ram you want to use the 5:4 ratio.
If you do then your memory can run at default specs and force the front side bus to 20% more.

Example
250 FSB (1000Mhz QDR)
is 200 Mhz DDR
So the result would be the cpu would run at 3ghz with the memory running at default 400MHz

250x5=50 50x4=200 <<<<hence the 5:4 ratio
Looking at this processor I would think that ALL 2.4C's will hit 3GHz.
Mine did at default voltage, I had to up it a little to go farther.

After all the playing is done, more than likely I'll run the cpu at an even 3 GHz.
Less heat on the cpu and less wear and tear. Plus the added bonus I payed $200 for a comparible $450 cpu.

Could anyone Suggest/Comment:

I was thinking of getting Kingston HyperX PC3500 512 X2. Or would anyone think that I could get higer Overclocking potential if I went with Corsair XMS PC3500 512 X2? I ask, as I've heard some compatability issues with Corsair & 875 Motherboards, but maybe that was just for PC3200 Ram?

But is it worth it to pay a premimum for the Corsair?

Also, I think I'm going to get a Aftermarket HSF Combo for my Retail 2.4c. I'm thinking about the Thermaltake Sparke 7. Is this a good performer? I'm willing to spend up to$40 for a combined Heatsink AND Fan. Suggestions please.

Thanks

Get Geil Golden Dragon PC3500. People have gotten it up to 500Mhz.

The ThermalTake Spark 7 is great. Best you can get under 40.

Nice overclock. I have a similar setup.

My IC7/2.6C combo does 3.4GHz @ Default V-Core. Overclocking this rig almost seems too easy.

I was finally able to break 70 FPS in the Comanche 4 Demo.

Would Samsung 3200 RAM work with a 2.4C overclocked to 3.2 ? I have a friend who ordered his RAM before the 2.4C and he was unsure whether it would o/c reliably. Most of the guys I saw running the 2.4C and IC7 are using Corsair 3200 or 3400 but I was under the impression Corsair just handpicks Samsung chips so, in essence, the Samsung is nearly the same quality. TIA

Running a [5:4] Mem Ratio @ DDR427 with 2.5-3-3-7 Timings should not be a problem.

All of my 256/512 sticks of CAS3 PC3200 Samsung Original will run @ DDR450 with 2.5-3-3-7 on the IC7 (Default Voltage)

Okay Guys, I copied this from the end of the Anand Review of the Alabatron 865 Motherboard, in th Final Words seciton:

Next week we will be posting an article detailing which 865PE and 875P motherboards our labs were able to successfully run with several different types of memory modules from Kingston, Corsair, OCZ, and TwinMOS. In addition, we will have a full roundup of at least 13 motherboards based on the 875P chipset and more 865PE reviews the following week. As you can see there's quite a bit coming up, so stayed tuned?

But I think I've already made up my mind to get the Kingston HyperX PC3500, but I'm still kind of on the bubble between this and Corsair. BOTOH, I've heard that Corsair and 875 MB's have had compatibility issues, so I'll wait to read the Interview.

Another question, would anyone say that spending an extra $40 on a 3rd party HSF combo, would get me better O'C results than using the supplied Intel HSF combo (yeah, I know that prolly is a dumb question, but you never know)? I was thinking of getting the Thermaltake Sparke 7 for $25 at NewEgg. But can anyone think of a better cooler for less than $40; that also has Variable fan control and Thermal sensor?

I don't know if it's better but SVC has the Zalman 7000 CUAL for $29.99 as an alternative.

The Zalman is a very nice heatsink, and yes it fits on the IC7 (it's what I run).

I know it's only Sandra, but the memory bandwidth with that chipset is off the hook! Man am I looking at what I don't need in my computer room to help pay for the upgrade without the wifey gettin' bent about it :p
