I've flown to LA a couple times. Always on American Airlines. And always it's sucked (cramped coach seats with no ammenities. JetBlue and Song has DirectTV dammit!!!!)

Now I'm flying to Taiwan via LA. American Airlines from Miami to LA and then China Air from LA to Taiwan.

Anyone do this trek? It's a long ass flight. Especially from LA to China.

Does China Air have entertainment? I don't even care if it's in Chinese!!! How about plug-ins for laptops and do the offer an option for Internet access? For a 14 hour flight, I'll PAY for Internet access!!!

I know I "might" find this info on their website, but I find that features vary so much from flight to flight. I don't even know if I'm going to get food or not anymore!! :(

Thats really the time to upgrade to business class or something if at all possible.

I might have to go to Japan this January and the wife and I have been saving all our airline miles so we will have enough to upgrade to Business class on at least the long leg of the flight.

You will probably be flying on a 777 or something big and nice, those at least have entertainment and power outlets in coach. At least on American they do.

I'm flying first class, actually.

On a flight that long, the price difference is minimal.

I know if that I'm bored out of my skull, I can sleep in a first class seat. Coach flights longer than three hours makes me want to kill people. Literally. I've been arrested at airports a number of times for killing people.

If I could get internet access, I'd probably stay up the whole flight! :D Probably posting on AT! ;)

I've flown from Central california to Pittsburgh a few times coach, and it hasn't been that bad. Buy yourself a PSP and a couple games and movies. That'll make the time pass by pretty quick .

I'm sure they will have the phones you can plug into for dialup :)

Expense it to the corporate account :p

Oh yeah... my i850 has Tetris and Frogger on it. I know what you mean. :)

This flight is four hours to LA and then 14 to Taiwan though.

That's a little different. ;)

Chowderhead, don't be a chowderhead. ;)

When I said, "I don't even know if I'm getting food on a flight anymore" that meant in general. I can have a four hour first class flight and the itinerary will say "brunch or snack" and I get a bag of cashews. I never know what to expect when I get on a plane.

Like the one time I flew Ted. I didn't know it would be the dirtiest, stinkiest plane with seats closer together than any other plane I had ever flown in. See... THAT was a surprise. ;)

I flew from NYC to Anchorage to Tapei on China Air. It wasn't that bad...plane was huge. Watched a few movies and pretty much just slept the whole time.

Lots of talk about rates in those forums.

That's something I noticed about CI. Rates vary A LOT.

Did you know it costs HALF AS MUCH to fly from Taiwan to US then it does from the US to Taiwan if going one way?

What's up with that?!?!?

"Escape from Taiwan!!"

I don't know about China Air, but Malaysia and Singapore both have little TVs with video games and movies on the back of each seat. I would think that most international flights would have this now.

I fly coach though so it could only be better for first class.

I've taken China Airlines from NYC to Anchorage to Taiwan. There will definitely be entertainment such as US-released movies and sometimes pre-recorded news programs in Chinese and European. The food is actually pretty good and the stewardesses were not bad looking. Beware the window seats if you tend to frequent the bathrooms.

Done the flight twice, back and forth (plus kept going to Bangkok which makes the trip even longer). China Air rocks and their seats on that route have the full line up of movies, news, tv, and games.

I flew to Taiwan and back when I was.... 10? I believe we took China Air. On this particular flight, it was literally >95% Asian people so the big screens were showing all non-english programming. At the time there weren't individual screens for each person but I don't think that's the case now. I honestly don't remember being bored at all but I also don't remember how much I slept. I'm sure being so young also made the experience much more exciting.

Anyway, surviving 13 hours with all the amenities I didn't have won't be that bad =p. Personally I would stay up all night before flying out, sleep on the plane, and be halfway recovered from jetlag as soon as I stepped off.

I was confused by that too, but I think they mean China Airlines when they say China Air

China Air (Taiwan) != Air China (China)

yup, China Airlines is a taiwanese airline company. They use to suck, but have improved tramendously in recent years. They charge $25 for the night for unlimited internet on the plane. Definitely worth the money.

That's not true. It TOTALLY depends on the airline and the flight. One time I flew from Tampa to Detroit on NWA and it only cost $100 to upgrade to first class. Another time, I flew from Tampa to Miami on AA and it only cost $50 to upgrade to First Class. I easily "spent" that money on all of the free drinks I had on the trip! :) Yes... I can slam a lot in a 1.5 hour flight. ;)

I'm not going to say how much my ticket cost, but for the same amount of money I could have gotten a pair of coach tickets and brought my wife.

But then I thought.. "wait a minute... why would I WANT TO bring my wife?!?!"

J/k hon. ;)

I'm pretty sure international flights have huge price differences between the 3 classes. Heck in domestic fligths Continental will upgrade you to first class if you are a member and there are empty seats (which has happened the 3 times I've flown). I am also flying to Taipei from LAX. I am really intrigued by the Internet option on China Airlines. Hopefully Malaysia Air has it too

LOL. Ok... You got me. I'm lying. Busted! I didn't really just price out the tickets, contemplate taking my wife with me and then settled on sending myself via 1st Class. Yeah... Shens on me!
