OK car people who know tires...

A friend got her car hit in a parking lot. Broke her taillight and creased the rear door (minivan). Apparently someone with a tire on the back of their vehicle backed into her van. Thing is the tire lift a partial print. There are a few letters visible and a star. Not an asterisc like shape or the Chrystler symbol, but a star like on the US flag.

So, what brand tires have a star? What kind of cars use such a tire? There is a good chance of tracking the person down as they did this in a church parking lot and chances are they are a regular. She's looking at $1000 in repairs so it would be nice to find out who did this (and ran off) as opposed to paying out of pocket or reporting it to the insurance company and getting higher. (Funny how they charge you more when you claim that which you have been paying for for years....)

I think that you'd be better off by look for cars/suvs with tires that are mounted on the back, and going from there. If this was at church, just keep an eye out for the SUV.

Honda CRV and Jeep Wrangler are two that come to mind with an EXPOSED tire on the back...

she can just let the insurance take care of it then switch companies if they charge her more. it's not on her driving record

The problem is she is stuck paying the deductible. And if she has liability only, her insurance doesn't cover it at all.

I don't remember what the letters are, she said they were not in order either. Its probably a lot easier just to look for cars with rear tires (and we do have a lot of wrangler drivers), but not as much fun!

I did tell her to take a picuture or some video of the mark. Good thing we have all the sand and salt on the roads, makes for nice prints when its gets all over your car and someone hits you!

What are the letters? I'm not sure what kind of tires use a star. Overall, I think that your best bet is to watch the parking lot and see if the vehicle comes back. Find the one that has an exposed tire at the right height, the tire will probably have scuff marks on it from the impact too.

What if the person removed the tire though... then the whole plan of tracking them down is hopeless.

We have a winner! You nailed it first wje. Ameri is the brand (General Tires) there is an "IR" on the back of the van next to the star. I took some video of it before the snow washed it away.

We also spotted a RAV4 with a tire on the rear. Had a slight scuff on the tire and what looked like a small dent on the bumper. From what we know of the car, the person will be there today.

Maybe this is the person....if it is its really rather sad. Very nice lady, but as it turns out whoever did it not only ran off without leaving a note, but also cleaned up the broken taillight off the ground because only a few small pieces were found the next day in the light.

We have not seen the person yet. The Rav4 was spotted one day, but not since. I did get the mark on video so unless they rotate or change the tire on the back they are driving around with a virtual fingerprint on their car.

HAHAHAHA

My neighbors '95 Jetta has El'cheapo tires on it, the name is a killer.
