OK, can somebody explain the whole Half-Life 2/CS:Source/Steam phenomenon?

OK,

I want to get back into CS. I see that Steam (which is the reason I stopped playing, wasn't a huge fan of it in the beginning) can sell me HL2 with CS. But 60 bucks US is a PITA.

So, what I'm wondering is if I buy a HL2 coupon from the ATI XT card bundles from a way back, can I get CS:Source now? Or do I need to wait?

So basically I'm asking: Can I buy the HL2 coupon and still get CS Source now? I know there's "warezed" versions of source around... But is that a way to circumvent paying anyhting for HL2? Or just a way for folks with HL2 to get CS now instead of waiting?

If you follow the link, it says the ATI coupon is the same as a bronze package, meaning HL2 with CS:Source.

I'd be careful though if you buy the coupon from someone - it could have been used already.

There are torrents of CS:S running around, but these are illegal versions. Yes, it is a way to circumvent paying for HL2 to get CS:S, but it's not legal, plain and simple. No, it's not just a way for folks with HL2 to get CS now instead of waiting, because no matter what version of HL2 you will buy (3 Steam packages or 2 retail versions), you will get CS:S alongside of it. CS:S is the multiplayer component of HL2. The only way you'd have to wait to play CS:S is if you decided to wait until it's released in retail other than buying immediately from Steam. If you purchase from Steam now, you automatically get CS:S to play as soon as you download it.

I know what you mean, I am not a fan of steam either.
However, I wanted CS Source now, so I went ahead and purchased the Bronze version of HL2, it's $50.00.
The Silver version is $60.00. (I'm now thinking I should have gone with Sliver - anybody know if an upgrade is available?)

Thanks for the info all.

Decided to order silver... I haven't played a couple of their older games (Why isn't Blue Shift available?) and I figured the Source engine would be a really good excuse to play HL1 again.

Quick question about steam.. if one buys one of the packages, the only access to HL2 will be to download it correct?

You can burn the main files onto a CD/DVD once it's downloaded though.
