Ok Camera Experts need your advice!

I am thinking about one of the nicer Canon EOS cameras for purchase. There is a 1400 dollar one that I was told would do just as much as a professional digital camera. I want to yeild better results with my pictures and get a better quality look. Any suggestions you would like to throw out would be most helpful.

This is one of my many side hobbies, and I would like to explore my options and delve further into this.

Thanks!

PS. was looking at the Rebel XT let me know if anyone has had any experience with this digital camera

How much £££?

Top end would be the 1 series and that being:
1d Mark II (full frame sensor, 16mp) $5k+
1ds Mark IIn (for sports photography) $3.8k retail

Not sure exactly on price as I don't look at $$$ prices as I'm in the UK.

These would be AMAZING cameras. They are the top end and have pro bodies. VERY rugged bodies that will take a beating. Heavy also.

What sort of photography are you doing/ looking in to?
What stuff do you currently use?

If your not using a separate external flash your missing out a lot!

Get a nice lense and that will let you be better in poorer light conditions. Your pictures will look RAZOR sharp.

5D, decent flash, decent lense = great images.

Read some of their posts and the images they do.

The 5D ($2.5k or so)

A very nice camera. and a hell of a lot cheaper then the 1 series!

The 30D's a good camera, but the image quality is exactly the same as that of the Rebel XT. It has extra features like spot metering, a larger buffer and can shoot continously faster/longer......but most of those things if you needed, you would know it. The lens and flash (or lighting) will add more to the final product then the actual camera body, so for example a Rebel XT with a good lens and flash will take much better pictures then a 30D with an inexpensive lens and no flash.

I say get the XT body for as cheap as you possibly can and then get nice lens or two with the difference between that and the 20D/30D.

The price difference would get you the 17-40L & the 50mm f1.8 lenses along with the XT body.

I don't know as I did not ask too many questions when I was there. I was at Bestbuy. They had a number of cameras there. I am not a digital camera expert, only a novice at best. I have an old digital camera that is about 4 1/2 years old. I want to get more into my photography hobby... and take some more professional looking photos. It is overwhelming sometimes when I am looking at most of the cameras.

My max limit for spending would be $1500. tops

If you're a novice get the XT, a lens and a flash definitely instead of blowing the entire $1500 on the 30D.

Get an XT and 1 or 2 lenses. What type of photography is this for?

Most of my pics have been an assortment of people, places, and objects.. like abstract art, and such

I would like to get much better at photographing people though. I would also like to delve more into photographing animals and capturing animals in motion

The Rebel XT is too small if you have big hands. I found it not comfortable to hand-hold at all. Have you thought about looking at the Nikon side of things, or are you committed to Canon at this point?

Well I am a small woman, with small hands so I don't think that would be a problem for handling. However I haven't looked at the Nikons... but could pull up the website. Which Nikons do you suggest?

The Nikons that would be in your range would be the D50 (low-end, lens/body outfit can be found for ~$600 and less, EXCELLENT camera), the D70, the D70s, and the D200 ($1600 or so I think). Personally, I have the D50, and am extremely pleased with it. In fact, I've not heard of anyone who purchased the D50 and wasn't happy with what they got. The D70 is a couple of years old now, but still a widely used DSLR, and the D70s is a newer, better refresh (around $900-$1000 I think).

You really can't go wrong with Canon or Nikon with the budget you have, it's just that I only know of Nikon stuff, and wondered if you'd looked that way yet. I'd check out dpreview.com if you want more detailed info.
