Ok, before I call my dsl providor - what do I look for

episodic

Quick description:

I click on a link - I get a 404 error
I click on same link - I get 404 error
I click on same link - the browser goes to the site no problem

This happens itermittantly - with big sites, I know that are not down.

I've tried another nic card, I've tried cleaning my dslmodem's walljack connection, reformatting (yes), and still have the problem. I have the problem with and without my router.

Thanks for whatever you might can tell me. It is very annoying, and I know tech support is gonna suck to call.

Try running a continuous ping to a major site such as yahoo or google. (ping -t ip.address.goes.here)

If you're seeing intermittent drops, it may be an issue with the provider, or somewhere from them to you. Could also be DNS related so you might try setting your comp to use some different dns servers for a while to see if that solves the issue.

Sorry.🙁

In any case if you call the ISP you probably have to install the PPPOE software again and directly conncet a computer to the Modem otherwise they might refuse to support you.

:sun:

P.S. Is the keep the connection always alive is check in the Routers WAN Menu?

P.S2. May be you should try the three things that are mentioned at the end of this page too.

The connection is always alive in my wan menu

The internet junk won't do anything, in my OP - I actually reformatted my computer to make sure it was not my software.

What about the DNS thing the other guy mentioned? Could that be it?

A 404 is a generic "page not found" message that is returned by a webserver when it doesn't understand what you're asking for or the URL doesn't exist.

Try going to two different websites with totally bogus URL's. "http://www.yahoo.com/blablabla.html" and "http://www.google.com/blablabla.html". The error pages should look very different. Do they?

It is possible that your ISP is using some kind of proxy server (or array of 4 proxy servers) and some are misbehaving for you, for some odd reason or another. It's fairly common for big ISP's to use transparent proxies, as they increase end-user performance and minimize bandwidth to the Internet, especially for big sites like yahoo, google, etc. If they are set to round-robin the requests and only one is working right, you could see this very symptom.

Yea these look different. What gets me is I can click once - no work, twice , no work, and click a third time (in rabid succession), and bingo the site loads. So the site is really there.

That's really odd. Definitely time to call the DSL provider.

By the way - Don't be hesitant to call these guys up. Spend some time troubleshooting, then give them a ring. That's what they are there for.
