Well... that is interesting... what is more interesting is that Inq doesn't think it will be much different. I thought the R580 was what the 9700 Pro team was working on and that it was going to be another pretty large jump. Guess we will wait and see, but we could theoretically see these before Christmas if this is true, right?

Well, there goes my plan to buy the r520...

If this is true, then we can expect the r520 is nothing more than a transitional product, something like the x800pro was before the x800xt arrived. Now tell me, who would run out and buy the x800pro if they knew the x800xt was coming in a few months? Not me. Add to this the rumor that the r520 may only have 16 pipes, and it may not be any better than a 7800gtx, then anyone who doesnt have a 7800gtx already might not be willing to shell out $500 on a card that will be second-class in 2-3 months.

While of course better chips is not something to complain about it seems like they all come stumbleing upon eachother ATM, or rather the annoucement of them come. So if you're still waiting for the r520 will you instead wait for the r580?

Like the article says, I'm sure timing will depend on how well the R520 fares against the 7800GTX, and how soon Nvidia cranks out the 7800Ultra. I've lost a lot of faith in ATI these past few months, so for all I know the R580 is just another bag of hype.

If Ati has finally beaten the tech problem with the R520 and is able to get high yields, then with a 90nm process theoretically should have more chips per wafer enabling lower per chip costs (well, in this case not quite what Ati tought) and enabling them to price point this easier.

R520: Ati's High-end-mid-tier chip. Can't wait to see the product code on this thing

x900pro? Nah, that's too easy. How about X900GTX?

If the R520 had come out in June like they originally planned it may have been a good thing. However now that the 7xxx series is out from NVIDIA, the R520 won't be anything special and ATI may have to wait until 2006 for the R580 to be their flagship product.

Of course if a 7800 ultra shows up it may be the nail in the coffin for the R5xx series before they even get a start.

Not if, but when.

I predict nVidia has the 7800 Ultra waiting for Rxxx launch.

And I predict it will just be a higher-clocked version of a 7800gtx, and not likely to stand up well against an r580.

Absolutely no one should find this surprising. At least, no one that has been around at least since the FX5800. Both ATI and Nvidia have teams working on separate projects. The FX5800 was launched way behind schedule, but the 5900 shipped only a few months later because it was still on schedule. I'm sure the same is true with the R520/R580. The fact that the R520 is behind schedule has little (perhaps nothing) to do with the R580's development.

Nah, Ultra's are usually little more than overclocked cores with faster mem and a bigger HS/Fan and Uber pricing. 7800 Ultra will no doubt be a 512mb unit as well. Might as well go with two 7800GT's :)

However, if 7800GTX and R520 run neck n neck, the Ultra wil make the race a sure thing for nVidia. But it all remains to be seen.

All the same for us guys that bought lately. The relative performance of our cards (and value) will drop. Such is life when buying computer parts. If Ati can release nice cards that compete well in their respective price brackets, all will be happy - except maybe for us recent buyers.

Yep, and that is how it (has and always will) worked.

Then again, if R520 is disappointing, our cards values won't drop nearly as much :p

If you mean an ultra with more pipes, then i'd have to go with the opposite prediction, but I don't doubt some sort of refresh, but it won't be called a 7800 ultra, and will just be higher memory/core speeds

Of course thats all it will be. That's all an ultra product ever is.

7 series GeForce cards should be going head to head with R515, R520 and R530 cards.

GeForce 8 cards are the ones going up against the R580. Then again, ATI's delays have thrown the whole scale out of proportion

WTF does "taped out" mean?

Where is Rollo to attack ATI? He must be busy hanging with his nvidia friend who gives him secret drivers.

lol..well my secret ATi friend showed me some performance graphs of R520 today. It scores 8500 on 3dmark05 default and has 2x the shader perf. of x850xt pe!

ok i have no special ati friend. :(

Stop dissing Rollo.

There are plenty of ATI fanboys here just as bad as Rollo.

I'm glad he has drivers that stop the shimmering, now I dont have to read 50 threads posted by ATI fanboys about how "Nvidia suX0rs cause of the ultra noticable, gives me a headache, the characters on my favorite game show up as bunnies, shimmering effect."
