Ok, AT Mac users....here is a question for you...

I'm currently using my PC at a video editing machine (Liquid Edition Pro) as well as a gaming rig. I do like the editing software alot! I love the effects, the GUI, and the abilities of it. But I've been extremely disappointed in the rendering capabilities. I've had issues with the final DVD working on some DVD players.

After much deliberation, I'm thinking of purchasing a G5 (....or wait for a G6?) and using Final Cut Pro. This machine would be only an editing machine, and nothing else. I hear nothing but good things about Final Cut Pro, and the combatibilty is 2nd to none (or atleast, that is what I've heard). I also hear good things about After Effects.

Does anyone have any comments or suggestions? Its an expensive and bold move, but I'm willing to go for it if its as good as I hear.

Dont know if it will sway you any, but at the college where I work we dumped final cut and macs for PCs using Adobe After Effects and Premier. This was not a budget based move either

FCP can be a pain in the rear sometimes with it crashing when doing really simple stuff like opening a clip or marking the timeline. Also can have occassional audio/vid synch issues with certain video boards. Interface feels sluggish as well even on a high end G5 box with 4 gigs of mem. Also Compressor crashes more often than I ever like it to and DVD Studio Pro isn't 100% flawless either when it comes to burning DVD's. Half the disks I burn won't play on DVD players  That's even when using TY or Ritek or even Apple's own certified media. I went back to using Premiere and After Effects on a dual Xeon box with SCSI storage and I'm not going back.

If you have DVD compatibility problems, get another software layout program and/or a new DVD burner w/ a higher quality disks.

However, Final Cut Pro is the best editing program I've used. (And I?ve used Premiere Pro, Vegas 5, Edius, and Avid Xpress). The interface is incredibly efficient and it's a great value (For 1000 dollars, you get FCP HD, Livetype, Cinema Tools, Compressor, Peak DV, etc), and it has really great hardware support, making very scalable if you ever want to edit HD, Beta, or Film. An important thing to note is it's great integration with Motion and DVD Studio Pro (Which BTW are equally terrific programs). Look into the production bundle if you go the FCP route.

Also, After Effects runs on Mac's as well as PC's. And you should get it, it's a great program. Look into Combustion also, if you?re into Compositing/Motion Graphics. IMO, it's a better program for Compositing.

Have you ever had compatibility issues with playing DVDs on regular set top boxes?
