Ok, am I being too picky?

Let me first say that I made a bad assumption and I didn't ask questions. That is on me.

My wife, my son and I went to Sears today to get some portraits made of my 10 week old son. One of the reason we went to Sears was based on a friend's recommendation and the fact that I get the "original" photos and rights to them on a cd.

That is where the problem comes in. We do the whole thing, order the prints we actually wanted made and go home. I pop in the cd to look at the originals.

They are 2560x1920 resolution and ended up being 256kb in size. So while the resolution is decent, they compressed the hell out of the photos. I don't consider 256kb original high resolution photos(I realize the resolution is high but the compression is horrible). Not to mention they actually forgot to compress the heck out of one of the photos and it was 1.5mb at the same resolution.

The actual pictures turned out great, I just don't have any real method to reproduce larger copies with this quality original photos. And yes, I can see lots of compression when I look at the images.

So am I crazy to expect something better? BTW, I do plan on going up and asking for the pictures in a copy less compressed.

Overall paid $150.....

Cliffs:
Took son for portraits
Got CD of "original high resolution" photos
Said photos are compressed big time.
Not happy.

No because we went this morning. My wife was sick last night with a stomach bug and vomiting all night. Then today when I got back from the pictures, I got the same thing.

We are both under the weather. I plan on going up tomorrow if health permits.

Before anyone blasts me about exposing others to the illness, we thought my wife just ate something bad. Not until I got sick did we realize it was something else.

That resolution works out to around 4.9 megapixels. A 35mm photo taken by a high end camera with a good lense if scanned in would be approx 20 megapixels if not higher.

So, that is a low resolution, for an 8x10, or a very low resolution for anything bigger.
Also, no, you are not being picky, you should expect to get quality, not some crap that you coulda taken with a $100 P&S digicam. Ask for PNG or lossless TIFFs, or even BMP's .... Tell them you want the original resolution too....

When my wife bought some portraits of our son, the package she bought included a CD with the originals on it. There were low/medium resolution JPEG files plus high resolution files that were encrypted. Presumably, we could return to the portrait studio (Portrait Innovations) with the CD and order additional prints from any of the encrypted files.

Sears may be doing something similar.

Yeah they give you full rights to the photos. That is one of the reasons we went there.

Yes, I wouldn't expect anything better.

Even knowing they have the better quality pictures at their disposal?

not really.

The camera they used is only 5.6 megapixel. So I don't expect much better in terms of resolution.

I believe the camera was an Olympus E-1

Yep. You don't think they want you making your own copies, do you? ;)

I just read the link, maybe I should make that "making your own high quality copies" :p

Well my receipt says,"Satisfaction Guaranteed or your money back". Since I am willing to bet they don't want to give refund for pictures I have had access to, they will either provide the best versions they have on their computer or they can retake all the photos and give me the high quality pictures from that session.
