oil leaking

"I found your problem - the oil is leaking from the timing chain cover where there's a hole that the <some sort of sensor or something> would attach to if your engine was fuel injected.

This is for a Volvo-Penta 6 cylinder 190 hp engine in a glastron boat. I just had a new short block put in last year & had approximately 1 hour on it before we discovered the problem.

Sound like a significantly expensive problem?

That would depend, how was the hole filled before? Is it threaded?

If it was just something that screwed in you may be able to find a bolt that you can use to plug it up.

crank position sensor - that's the hole it leaks from. Couldn't think of that yesterday. Not sure if there's a bolt in there or what. If it's a bolt, then I'd think they could just remove it, put some sealant on the bolt, and reinsert it.

Bigger question - is this something that likely happened as a result of them putting in the new short block last year - would they have necessarily been responsible for seeing that it wasn't leaking from that position? It didn't leak before; and with very little time on the engine, it was short 3 quarts of oil. I got damn lucky that although I knew it was supposed to rain one day, I didn't put on the rain cover. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have checked the oil until I filled up the gas tank again.

Of course, on the negative side, my anchors, anchor ropes, oar, and a few other things I rarely use & store below the deck are now pretty slimy, as well as the carpet in that storage area. Anyone recommend a good de-greaser that I can buy in "bulk"?

The crank position sensor is something that they should have dealt with when they put in the short block. Give the people that replaced it a call.

Absolutely they are responsible. They either didn't use the marine version of the block or forgot to transfer over whatever was plugging that hole in the original block. I suppose of course that if the original motor suffered a catastrophic failure of some kind that the plug could have been damaged. Regardless, it is most certainly their responsibility.

Degreaser

Edit: They should be very happy to accommodate you. By a stroke of luck, they've avoided a very expensive warranty repair - the engine seizing.

Have to agree. The crank position sensor resides in the short block, they screwed up when replacing the short block.

Thanks guys,
Got off the phone with the marina earlier today: it's going to be covered by the warranty. Apparently, there's some sort of plastic plug inside that is probably damaged.

Quite frankly I'm amazed nobody has suggested a resource where you can purchase alternator-sized quantities of bulk de-greaser...
