To everyone who buys oil in a quart or 5 quart container and stock up in the garage make sure it is in a cool place. I stock up when oil is on sale but sometimes my garage gets hot especially when I pull 2 cars inside the oil tends to leak out of the container. I am talking a puddle of oil when it leaks out. sometimes 2 quarts leaks out.

I've never heard of that happening before... How hot are we talking?
I always keep oil in my folks' garage for their and my car, and have never had this problem.

I would say 90 to 100 deg. If you have good ventilation you should be okay. Mine has 2 small 6x 3 ventilation near the ground.

I wonder if something else is at play.
My garage is over 100 degrees for probably 5 months of the year, and I have never had oil leak out of a container.

i dont understand how it would get out. maybe the jug was an an angle and the cap wasnt tight? it should have a peel-off seal if it was never opened.

Uh.. The hell are you talking about? lol

Stop putting holes in your oil containers and you won't have this problem.

I have mobil oil 5000 miles and the motocraft 5-20 blend. Once it happen when the 1 quarts was on top of the toolbox. This time I placed the 5 quarts container on the ground. Sure enough it leaked. This doesn't happen a lot. I would say that my 5 quarts container has been in the garage for 5 years and just now leaked. I looked at it and the indicator is now at 4 quarts. The seal is still in tact but there is a part of the seal that is now open. The last time this happen was three years ago when the one quart bottle was sitting on top of the toolbox. The whole side of the toolbox was covered with oil. I thought someone might have spilled it. happens at cap side

Anyone have a tip on how to clean the garage with spilled oil?

There are several ways, you can buy a product from most DIY stores which does it, like patio cleaner etc. However, sand can be used to soak it up but does not clean it, the very best and proven way is to get your wife to clean it and dont let her in your house until she has. Generally this may take a couple of nights but she will do it if she wants to go to bed sometime etc.

I have stored an uncountable number of containers either with oil in them or oil remaining in them, and have never had one spontaneously spring a leak. It doesn't even make any sense. :p

Are you saying they get hot enough that they expand enough to split open? Do you live in Death Valley? lol

Wouldn't the oil in your car be just as hot as the oil in your container?

I've never seen what you describe, OP, like everyone else.

I store my oils in a 10' x 12' enclosed storage shed. During the summer, temps inside routinely hit 110F and higher. When we hit 102F this year, I went out and the shed's internal temp was >120F. Still, no leaks from any plastic bottles, oil or anything else inside.

I live in Phoenix where it's over 100 about 1/3 of the year and have never seen this. Even the one I keep in the back of my car doesn't do that, even when its WAY over 100 after being parked in the sun all day.

nah, when i keep it in my shed it does the same thing. in the back of my truck, where its likely to get up over 120, it will swell the bottles and leak out as well. i made the mistake of leaving 4 quarts in the trunk of my impala one time years ago and had to replace all the carpet and spend days cleaning the oil out. sucked.
