I've noticed that Honda and Toyota's OEM oil filters have low rated filtering efficiency compared to some of the aftermarket options.

For example, the well-regarded Honda A01 (made by Filtech) is only rated for ~65% efficiency at 20 microns. Toyota's OEM filters have a similarly low rated efficiency. A PureOne is rated for 99.9% efficiency at 20 microns.

In the case of the Honda A01, it also has 40% more filter media than a PureOne (151 vs 108 square inches). So it would seem like Honda is going for a high flow rate with that much filter media + a low restriction, less efficient media.

Which brings me to the question...is using a high-efficiency (more restrictive) filter like a PureOne really a good idea when the OEM filters are mostly designed to favor higher flow?

Most change their oil so often it never comes into play so that is why some filters can get away with a little less efficiency and not have a problem.

But also make sure you are looking at the same ratings. There is single pass vs multi-pass. Plus the way they are tested. The only oil filters I stay away from are Fram. Its the only filter I have had fail on me as a user and/or a auto tech.
