Oil Change Reminder

I’m looking for what was called a magnetic mount oil change mileage reminder. In the old days, after an oil change, the garage would place this magnetic oil change reminder on your dash and dial the numbers to 3,000 miles more than what your odometer read to let you know when your next oil change is due.

I don’t like the vinyl decals on the windshield as they block part of my view, tend to fall off, and the ink fades from the sun making the numbers unreadable. I would rather have a magnetic oil change reminder with numbers that I can change to my liking.

Does anyone know of a source for this or a similar type product?

Any preschool supply store should have these.

🙂 Sorry, I couldn't find anything. But good luck finding any metal on a dash these days. What are you driving?

Never seen one.
I just change mine every 5000 miles. 5000, 10000, 15000, 20000...

Hard to have that kind of discipline. Most people will slipp to 5500...then 11000...a little more each time, throwing it off.

If I use a sticker, I just put it on the passenger side of the window, all the way at the top. Never notice it. If it's the type that's written on with a sharpie (instead of printed), though, the sun may fade the numbers out within 3-5k.

Just write it down and keep it in the glovebox. A lot of cars come with a service checklist in the documentation (either in the owner's manual or in a seperate service book). Plus you should keep all your maintenance receipts- it'll help you get more for the car if you ever sell it.

I do mine every 3000, I've never had an issue with the tiny stickers oil change places put up there.

The other thing I do is I have a spreadsheet for my car. Helps me keep track of the age of the fluids, tires, and help me record the parts I need and where I can I'm sourcing them from.

Just so you know, based on your single post. This image is now the number 2 picture for a search for "oil change reminder magnet" on google.

Ha! Does that make me one of those search engine optimizing guys? I guess I should become a consultant.

Sure, but I'm not sure how useful the string "oil change reminder magnet" really is (which is why it only takes a single post to raise an image that high)

Not really, you can still get it changed at 10,000 instead of letting it slide. if you can't maintain that much discipline you probably shouldn't be driving anyway.

My current car has it built into the trip computer, but before that I would just remember when I changed on the odometer. When I first started driving I was more concerned with it and would keep a log in the glove box.

If the sticker is blocking your view (which seems kind of hard to do IMO) you can just get a strip of masking tape and put it in the corner, or put it on the back of the rear view mirror.

You're saying if you went 500 miles too far on a few oil changes, you would then just change the oil early one time to catch up? Like a 1500 mile oil change? That's a bit silly.

And if I don't change my oil at nice, round numbers, I shouldn't be driving? LOL.

I just use the trip counter in the car. One for tires, one for oil. I change mine at 3000(ish), mostly because the car burns oil anyway. Though MOST of the time im changing the oil at about 4000 by the time i get around to it. Car has 170,000 miles. I do the same in my other car which is running at 220,000 currently.

they use a little piece of clear polymer that sticks to your windshield electrolytically now. no idea what they are called.

I think he's saying he never goes over.

But I agree, change your oil on time or quit driving. We don't need lazy undiciplined people on the road.

I think he's saying that if you went to like 15,540 miles and it should have been done at 15k, the next change is still going to be done at 20k, even though you haven't driven a full 5k miles on the oil.

It's what I usually do as well. I change mine every 5k on the ODO, but I'm about 300 miles over right now. I'm going to change it tomorrow, and the next change will still be at 135k instead of 135,300.

Sounds like an irresponsible waste of oil to me.

not sure if srs.

Not really. But if I were to change my oil 500 miles late, I would still wait 5000 miles for the next change. Can't think of a single reason not to. It's not really that hard to check the window sticker or write it down, so you can know when it's time to change again.
