there is a slight clicking noise i hear like 6 times per second. asked him how would i go about fixing it, he said a new engine, but just drive it for now and this time do oil change at the recommended 3-4K miles, and go from there.

did i just do irreparable damage to my engine? its a 97 4 cyclinder accord with 85K miles.

What kind of oil & what kind of driving? Was the oil low?
If it was synthetic & lots of highway miles, I doubt it was lack of oil changes.
Even regular ... I don't think it was just a long change interval. 6K isn't that long ... many cars spec > 3K now.

For the RTFM crowd, Honda's recommend oil change interval in that car's owners manual is 7,500 miles. Just FYI

I seriously doubt that any damage has been done, so long as the oil has been continuously topped off. IIRC the engine in that car has solid valve lifters that require periodic adjustment, and that is very likely the sound you hear. Get that done. But first, get a new mechanic. Preferably one a bit more qualified (or less likely to try to screw by lying to you that the recommended oil change interval is 3-4k miles).

Same thing... some newer cars can go longer.
The manual for my car says, "Change the oil when the oil life system indicates or after 12 months."

I've never waited for the light to come on or 12 months, though, but that is my own paranoia of keeping my car running well.

What's wrong with 1 year between oil changes? That's what most manufacturers, including Honda, recommend.

Not changing your oil at the recommended intervals is just plain nuts. Considering most places charge $20 - 25 to do the task for you. Consider the price of a new engine to get installed ($3K ?) and you can easily see how oil changes are cheap insurance.

Also, keep in mind that dirty oil makes for more emissions being emitted from your vehicle and can have an effect on your gas mileage. Considering all factors, the oil changes practically pay for themselves.

Highly unlikely that 6-7 and one year would have done this. First of all it's a proven fact that you can change your oil less than the 3k fine - and as mentioned I bet your honda recommends a much longer interval. Both of my cars recommend up to 7500 with conventional oil if you do easy driving. In regards to the year, yes that's normally too long, but I should also mention that my dad's x-type is on lease and he goes to get it serviced there and they are currently having him change the oil every year or 10k miles, so if your engine really is buggared it's quite unlikely that the oil change interval you used was the cause.

Hmm ... was the oil low when it was changed? Cars can actually consume a quart of oil every few thousand miles. If this was the case, the damage could have been caused by running the car low on oil.

It's doubtful that a car with that mileage on it is THAT much of a burner, especially given that it's Japanese. :p

One last time (and this is directly from the owners manual of my old '98 Acura that I accidentally kept after I sold the car), Honda's recommended oil change interval is 7,500 miles or 12 months.

Don't make me scan the damn page ;) , as I'm leaving for the club right now...

edit: get a new mechanic (one that's not an idiot and/or a thief) and get the damned valves adjusted :)
