Perhaps you've missed the news of Diebold losing out in states such as California, Maryland, North Carolina, Florida, etc. Diebold's hurting and now Blackwell wants to cut his losses and "magically" discovered he has some Diebold stock and wants to dump it.

He's as transparent as the rest of the criminals.

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The state's top elections official said Monday he accidentally invested in a company that makes voting machines.

Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell, who is seeking the Republican nomination for governor, said he discovered the shares for Diebold Inc. while preparing a required filing for the Ohio Ethics Commission.

"While I was unaware of this stock in my portfolio, its mere presence may be viewed as a conflict and is therefore not acceptable," he said in a letter included in his filing.

Blackwell said his investments are directed by an accountant and financial adviser without his knowledge or help, "similar to a blind trust."

He said a manager of his investments account at Credit Suisse First Boston bought 178 shares of Diebold stock at $53.67 per share in January 2005. Blackwell said the manager did not follow instructions to avoid such investments.

He said 95 shares were later sold at a loss but he still held 83 shares until discovering them and liquidating them Monday, also at a loss.

The state negotiated a deal with Diebold last year for $2,700 per touch-screen machine. In a statement given in May as part of a lawsuit, Judith Grady, who oversees the secretary of state's compliance with the 2002 federal voting act, said Blackwell was not involved with price negotiations.

What had been a mundane political duty took on new meaning last year after Gov. Bob Taft's failure to report several golf outings led to his no contest plea to ethics violations. He was fined the maximum $4,000.

Bob Paduchik, a spokesman for Attorney General Jim Petro, Blackwell's rival in the GOP primary, called for further investigation.

Democrats weren't buying Blackwell's explanation.

"If he can't manage to know what's in his checkbook, why would the people of Ohio want to trust this man with the state's checkbook?" said Brian Rothenberg, spokesman for the Ohio Democratic Party.
Accidentally?? BWA HA HA HA HA HA!!

Was Sen. Frist involved in managing the trust or something?

Let's see...

*CEO of Diebold promises to deliver Ohio to Bush.
*Coingate involves Bush Pioneer fundraiser and 2004 Bush/Cheney campaign chairman for NW Ohio, Tom Noe, scamming the state for millions of dollars. He's been indicted on 53 counts for various charges.
*Republican Congressman Ney has been linked to Abramoff and isn't out of the woods re: indictment
*OH Republican Governor Taft is at 16% approval and himself was charged with 4 criminal misdemeanors (1st time a sitting OH Gov. has been charged with crimes)

And now we have OH Secretary of State, the 2004 co-chair for the the Committee to Re-elect George W. Bush in Ohio (hmmm...sound familiar? *cough*Katherine*cough*Harris*) who happens to have purchased some Diebold stock "accidentally".

Hmmm....

He bought 178 shares...

For ******'s sake, let the guy invest his $9000 the way he wants. This isn't some huge f-ing conspiracy.

Or, he was having his taxes done, and discovered it in that process.

I don't understand you people. We're talking about less than $10k in stock!

Simple character assasination. Find anything and try to make it into a mountain. The next time his name comes up you have ammunition to marginalize them over some loose conspiracy theory.

You see it from both sides often.

Edit: Great example is the Bill Cosby thread. When Bill opened his mouth the last time magically all these "allegations" came out about him being a sexual predator. Notice how people who disagree with him now use these "allegations" to marginalize his msg?

To some people, $10,000 is a lot of money. And it's just a start, most likely. Not every criminal or unethical politician deals in the millions.

But, keep on applying that moral relativity.

fwiw, I was critical of McKinney for a $1,000 misuse of funds

Something like this needs to be investigated. The guy might be telling the truth, but he might not be either. If he was given these Stocks, 10k is a fairly substantial amount, certainly enough to perhaps Buy a Vote. If not, there could be Insider trading, but it's most likely just a bad Investment decision. Only an Investigation can clear the issue(s) up.

True, but tell that to Martha Stewart.

Put in H Clinton's name instead of this Blackwell character and it would be on FAUX 24/7.

I feel the same way about Martha Stewart. That entire trial was nothing but farce.

Purchased in Jan of 05.

Seems a little late to me.
Not for the next election.
Sold them recently, seems to early to me.
Considering the scandals embroiling the entire state, no wonder he finally sold them. That and Diebold is losing state after state and they aren't quite the expanding company anymore.

Huh - perhaps you can share this information you have that absoutely indicates he had any knowledge of actually owning these stocks.

Well?

Obviously, you don't see this continuing post... *surely* you'd reply if you did!
