Oh crap, so my main rig just died quite an annoying death, i was trying to access CBBD2 through sony SonicStage and suddenly it randomly reboots, so i think, ok strange, it goes through boot up and gets to windows is starting up and stops, a reboot, it does it again, i turn it off, leave it, it does it again.
So now im thinking oh this looks bad so I stick in the winXP CD thinking ill try the recovery console (Which ive never used before) anyway first time when it finished loading drivers it says x file is corrupt setup fails and it reboots, i try again and another file is corrupted and same thing happens, it reboots. Third times the charm so now im in the recovery console window, but as stated ive never used it, so what shopuld i do, is this even the right place to be? Any help would be great, thanks.

Rig
Win XP Pro SP1
20GB HDD (With OS and some programs on) Master on first IDE shared with a CD Rom
80GB HDD (Documents) Slave on Second IDE

Notes
1. XP Randomly Reboots
2 Stops at 'Windows Starting Up' screen
3 Setup failed twice, now in recovery console but dont know what to do.
4 Will FDisk if nessercary but would rather not.

Thanks

How old is the boot drive? Your hardware may be the culprit. Here is to hopping you backed up everything important.

The Boot drive is about 12 months old and it isnt making any strange noises, detected at boot and everything. I cant run a virus check because i cant get into windows, the last virus check was a few days ago and nothing was turned up. Is there a virus check i can run from outside of windows?

If you have an original Norton CD, you can boot off that in an emergency and do a quick scan.

I really think it's either hardware or a corrupted HD table...

hhmmm.... actual AV software on the system and it's still doing this. A challenge!

Well, if you have a legit AV program, do you still have the disc it came with? Try booting off that. Most allow you to run scans of the system that way I believe. If not, check out the maker's web site for Rescue Disc features. (Might be a good idea to do this anyway, as it ensures the latest definitions used in the scan)

If not that... it's likely hardware. Somehow.

I dont use norton i use PCCillin, How would i go about fixing a corrupted HD Table, will a simple reformat do the trick or will i need to do more?
**Edit** The av software was on a freedisk that came with my motherboard so i dont know whether it will work, but i will give it a try.

I just had a boot drive go bad with those same problems, no unusualy noises before hand. Do you have an extra drive around? If so just try to load windows, if it works its the drive, if same errors it is something else.

I have a drive with 98 on but if i put that it i dont see how it would prove whther the hard drive was bad or just the win xp installation?
