FireWire And Other Cards

When applied to a FireWire card, OHCI means that the card supports a standard interface to the PC which means that it can be used by the OHCI FireWire drivers that come with all modern versions of Windows (98SE, ME, 2000 and XP). Because the card has a standard OHCI interface, Windows does not need to know in advance exactly who makes the card or how it works - all Windows sees is a standard interface and says "I've got a driver for that".

Why This Matters

If you buy an OHCI FireWire card you know that pretty much every piece of DV-aware software will work with this card. It will use the standard Windows drivers and the whole process should be pretty hassle-free. If you buy a non-OHCI card, the software supplied with the card will work with it because it knows about the special drivers, but any software that isn't written to recognise the special driver will fail to recognise the card
