I watched a bit of Babylon 5 and was shocked by the acting. I don't remember it being that horrible, but those actors were too terrible to get past.

I watched the movie that acted as a pilot for Season 1, the acting was terrible, especially the woman playing the chief of security. Plot was good, special effects were OK, but the acting... The acting was so atrocious that I could not bear to watch it, like Star Trek Enterprise (minus Scott Bakula).

For b5, watch the last half of season one, then watch it all they way through season 4. Skip season 5.

Do I need to see the Star Wars trilogy first in order to enjoy Spaceballs? I've only seen the first Star Wars.

It might help a bit, but not much. I suspect you know enough of the others to get the references. Not all the references are from the Star Wars movies.

. . . you've never seen Star Wars?

I watched Star Wars myself (all six of them) for the first time last year. They're good, but they're kind of lost on me since I didn't really grow up with them. Also, I also watched all the Indiana Jones movies the year before that.

No idea why I never saw a Lucas film in my childhood... it just never came up.

Strange, i always thought b5 post season 1 had pretty decent acting. I thought Londo and G'kar were very believable in their roles; and everyone else was a step above what i've come to expect from scifi tv shows.

Edit: wait, are you talking about "the gathering" or "in the beginning"? Because i would agree on the horrible acting in the gathering. I would highly recommend watching in the beginning as the pliot for b5 instead of the gathering, as it actually explains the backstory, and the acting isnt terrible.
