Ok, so within two weeks I had two system data corruptions, meaning two reformats.

The first time it happened, I had been running the same installation for about six months. It crapped out shortly after installing: Desktop Sidebar (which I uninstalled after a day), Samurize (I uninstalled after another day) and Objectdock (which I kept). I would be playing CS and the thing would crash, and when it rebooted it would never boot into windows. Apparently a bunch of files from the C:/windows/system32 something or other folder were corrupt. So I reformat.

Fresh installation. I install all my necessary drivers, CS, and Objectdock. Within two days it craps out again, same problem. While playing CS, it locks up, I hard reboot it and Windows doesn't boot up. So I'm sitting here on my old HP typing this up, waiting for Windows to reformat again.

What leads to these data corruptions? I don't surf the web much, pretty much just Anandtech and to check my email, so I don't think it's a virus. I heard somewhere that if I have my SATA cord in a funny angle it can lead to data loss or corruption but as of now it's pretty straight so I don't think it's that either. Any ideas? This is the most annoying of problems...

Cliffs:
-System data corruption twice in two weeks
-Crashes during CS, doesn't boot up into Windows
-Both times within days of installing Objectdock, maybe this is the problem?
-Ideas or suggestions?

data corruption, all i can think of is if your computer really heats up. I have friends in college and their old AMD systems get so hot that it fries their hard drives. Looking at your high end system, it might be a cause. Not sure since im sure your hard drive is pretty new with that system tho.

High PCI/AGP freq. is typically the only thing causes data corruption.

Your using a Neo 2, so as long as your AGP/PCI is @ 67 it's locked..

AND PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE tell me you are using SATA ports 3 and 4 (closer to the CPU )

1 and 2 are not locked, and I could see data corruption EASILY happening..

Thanks for the tips guys.

I don't think it's a heat problem, Feelingshorter, everything in my comp is very cool, and everything is relatively new.

BJC, you bring up a good point with the SATA ports 1 and 2 being unlocked, but luckily I knew that beforehand and I'm using port 4 I believe. I usually keep the AGP at 67 as well (having it at default 66 can cause problems?)

Dave, after reformatting the first time I left everything at their BIOS defaults, so no overclocking the second time around.

Again thanks for the tips. I'm back on my computer (just got the internet working) and everything is fine for now. I'll only install the things I use every day (Opera, AIM, CS, Winamp, Zonealarm, Adaware, drivers for video card, sound card, mouse) and I'll skip on the Stardock stuff for now. Objectdesktop never gave me any problems but that's all I've been having after installing Objectdock. We'll see how it goes this time around.

Not that i can cause problems, but I believe 67 puts the lock in place.. Once you start cranking up that HTT with such a low multiplier, you definitely need the lock..

Are you certain on which ports?

Any specific reason why you are using 4? Instead of 3?

Shouldnt really make a difference though..

BJC, I am using the ports that are to the lower left of the CPU, right above the video card. I'm specifying which ports to show that I definately know which ports I'm using :)

:D

Those are the ones..

Seems odd that you are getting data corruption though.. Is the memory memtest86 cert? @ DDR 520... What timings are you running with that Rev 2?

7-10 passes?

I have had bad sticks of ram that would run windows for a slight amount of time, but then corrupt data..

Even a overnight run of memtest..

Yup, right there. It confirms Microsoft is at fault.

This is the problem when "techs" "tweak" their system.

Did you stop to consider that you may've damaged the hardware when you overclocked it the first time?

Yes, in fact I did, but can you help me name something I could've damage in overclocking that could corrupt data?

Hey BJC, my timings for this ram are as goes: 1T, 3-4-4-10, running at 1:1 ratio with the FSB at 200 making it PC3200.

Although, when I reset CMOS it defaults the ram to 2T, is this how it should be run? That would suck if these sticks could only do 2T...

2T isn't that big of a deal, but if you have been running stable for months it's something else..

Have you run memtest @ those speeds for 8-10 passes? Just to be sure..

A Brief History of CliffsNotes

Who was the original Cliff?

Born in a small, rural Nebraska town named Rising City, Cliff Hillegass epitomized the notion of the "self starter." Fueled by his early love of literature, Cliff was determined to go to college. To finance his education, Cliff held down two paper routes in addition to caring for his family's Jersey cows.

As a college student in the dust bowl days of the "dirty '30s," Cliff continued to pursue his love of learning. While a graduate student in geology and physics at the University of Nebraska, Cliff got married and started his first full-time job as a college bookstore representative for Long's College Bookstore (now the Nebraska Book Company). The numerous contacts Cliff develop through his work at the bookstore were crucial to the launch of CliffsNotes many years later.

One Toronto contact, Jack Cole, owned Coles, The Book People, which produced study guides called Cole's Notes that were published in Canada. During one momentous conversation, Cole suggested that American students would likely welcome a U.S. version of the notes. With that idea, Cliff launched CliffsNotes in August, 1958, with a line of 16 Shakespeare titles.

Working out of Lincoln, Nebraska, Cliff built the company that produces the most widely used study guides in the world. Cliff's message for students was to use CliffsNotes to better understand literature.

In 1998, Cliff sold CliffsNotes, Inc., and the brand lives on today as part of John Wiley & Sons, Inc. In May 2001, Mr. Hillegass died at the age of 83.
Timeline of Events

Not being American I had no ideal who he was.
