Seems like a decent price... on Ebay it looks like they closed for about $30-$40.

I'm guessing they're fairly new, as ResellerRatings has only one evaluation of them. It's a positive evaluation, though...it's tempting, as it'd let me put both of my printers up where all my computers can get at them.

FYI, here's more detailed product info.

I've puchased from Returnbuy before and wouldn't hesitate to again. They sell stuff all over ebay. You can check their rating there.

Re the print server, it comes out to about $39 delivered. Not bad for two ports. These go new for around $100.

This is a decent print box. I have a client using it for the past couple of years.

If you have XP, XP supports it directly (not sure if 2000 does or not).

I've used one of these for a couple of years to drive a Panasonic KXP-4401 Laser and an Epson inkjet. Works great.

Just got mine today...had a bear of a time getting it to work at first. DHCP was disabled out-of-the-box, so it wasn't grabbing an IP address. Since I only had TCP/IP installed on my Win2K box, this meant that none of the software that came with the server would see it. Just adding NetBEUI wasn't enough, either...the software needed to be uninstalled/reinstalled to talk to the server using NetBEUI. Once I got that working, I used their configuration software to enable DHCP. Once that was done, it would grab an IP address and all was well from there on out. I disabled NetBEUI and IPX support on the server, uninstalled NetBEUI and installed LPR support on Win2K, and uninstalled the bundled software. Win2K and Linux both talk to it now via LPR, and I can FTP into it to do any further configuration (odd that they use FTP for configuration instead of Telnet or HTTP).

(The MAC address printed on the bottom, which is needed for configuring your DHCP server, also had an extra digit in it...that was another source of confusion. The 7th digit needed to be dropped.)

At this point, it appears to work fine in unidirectional mode with my Lexmark Optra Color 40. The control software for the printer isn't able to talk to it (for changing cartridges, etc.), but I'm guessing that the available Linux software should work (create some files that get sent to it to carry out maintenance tasks). The driver provided by Netgear doesn't appear to support bidirectional use either, so I'd recommend sticking with LPR since it's cross-platform. There are some other UN*Xish protocols I hadn't heard of that it also supports, and it can also receive print jobs from NetWare print queues. I haven't tried those methods since LPR works well enough for Linux and I don't have a NetWare server set up here.
