I went to the work bbq but as soon as I grab something to drink, one of the head guys talks to my coworker saying there's no student workers (aka: me) allowed at the event. Blah!

So I grab a soda (which I won't be drinking any time soon, I don't like soda) and I head back to the shop alone.

Joke's on them, I won't be doing any work today!

You're better off, especially if you grabbed some BBQ to go (unless you were hoping to network).

It's lame when a company has an event like that and doesn't mention until you're actually there that contractors/student workers/interns/whatever aren't invited. Such a great way to boost morale.

yeah I know, I eyed the meat as I was walking off and I almost made a grab for a large piece. Damn my slow reactions!

It sucks too because my school has a large pond with geese and I was gonna feed them and grab them. They have easy to grab babies now too.

Those bastards!

I really can't stand when that type of thing happens. Not only is it embarassing for the person being kicked out, but what's the point of having a supposedly morale-raising event like a barbecue/party only to not include a huge portion of your employees and go as far as to KICK THEM OUT when they try to act as part of the team?

An upper-up at your company said there shouldn't be any student workers at a work BBQ? What a fvcktard.

they said there's too many student assistants so they weren't invited. But I've been here a year which is longer than 90% of the rest of these people.

Yeah. I was suprised he made me leave actually.

What's your job title? Seriously, I'd give my boss a piece of my mind if such a thing happened to me. It's one thing to pass out flyers/invitations/etc. saying that it's FT staff only (and possibly mention a student event later in the year) but to actually go as far as kicking them out? WTF?

I work in the lockshop with 2 other guys. Basically I have the highest responsibility job there is. I have no idea what my job title is, lockshop student assistant?

So you work in the key office, or you make sure that the doors on the buildings are locked at night/unlocked in the morning?

I worked as a Loss Prevention Specialist (read: door locker/unlocker) for my school for a while. The hours suck, but it's nice to get outside.

It's a fully functional lockshop. Fix broken locks/keys, rekey dorms/campus doors, safe work, lockers, door closing issues and such. It's pretty much identical to a lockshop outside of school. The two guys are licensed locksmiths.

Today I've been working on transfering all paper records to a computer. I just went to try and fix an automatic door right before I left for the BBQ.

That stuff kinda sucks. All of our company events make sure to let contractors know that they are not invited. I don't see what the big deal is...they work hard like everyone else.

Contractors, I can understand, somewhat. They're really not part of the company, and while they DO work hard, they're basically temps.

Student employees on the other hand, ARE part of the university community, and the whole point of ANY department at a university is to SERVE the university's students. Without the students, there wouldn't BE a university, much less a lockshop. That's what pisses me off.

Now that you've edited your original post I can make some sense out it. :D
Oh, and the guy who essentially kicked you out of the function is a total f^cktard.

I didn't mind not being invited. But it does suck once you find out after you get there as everyone watches you leave.
