So out of curiosity, I was looking at the high-end laptops from Sager, and customizing it (not including external extras like TV tuners etc.) came out to $4729! Specs:

FX60
2GB DDR400
GO 7900GTX
17" 1920x1200 display
2x100GB, 7200 RPM HDD (RAID optional)
8x +/- DVDRW, DL
XP Pro
3 year warranty

Wow.... mine was about as good as you could get a year ago last October (minus about $300 for the upgrade from a 1.7 to 2.0 P-M) and it "only" cost about $2200....

It is pretty ridiculous for the cost. At that price point, weight, and battery life, you might as well go for the small desktop instead.

These are desktop replacements... not your typical laptop that you'll be using on your lap on your commute.

Even the heaviest laptop replacements are MUCH more portable than the smallest desktops.

Unless I am way off, the processor you have choosen, alone, costs half the price of your current notebook. So I am not sure where the surprise comes from. You configure for some sweet, high-end parts, of course it costs a crap-load! Just look at those parts (they are nice) and don't be surprised the premium price they command.

yeppers and that isn't really high when compared to some other vendors. Like Voodoo and Falcon.

Even so, they are cheaper than they were 8 years ago.

I'd just get a SFF and bolt an LCD monitor to it, and tote around a few lead-acid wheelchair batteries. Admittedly, a 12v DC input PSU would be needed, but you can get one intended for a car PC for about 80$.
