but - doesn't the G0 stepping of the Q6600 consume about 95 watts ?

(105 for the B3, 95 for the G0.)

i thought the Q6600 is a step up in speed, from the Phenom, for a
multi-threaded ap like 3D Max or maybe Dragon Naturally Speaking.

so ... why buy a Phenom ?

i thought it would have a niche in terms of power consumption or
a lower price.

i don't like to bash AMD, i still like my 2.2 GHz Opteron dual core.

is the 2.2 GHz Phenom twice as fast as a 2.2 GHz Opteron 175, for
multi-threaded aps. ?

If you're constantly pegging all four of the cores...then yes.

As for the rest of your post, you're pretty much echoing the rest of us here. Phenom is a serious disappointment. I own an Opteron 165 and I see no reason to upgrade. If you look at the benchmarks, the A64 6400+ actually beats Phenom in quite a few benchmarks! :Q

Hold onto your current chip for now and wait for the Penryns to drop. It's going to make a world of difference.
For me Phenom is going to be a nice addition to my current rigs replacing a 2.2G 4600 with a 2.2G Phenom. The 4600 never oced worth a crap, getting 2.5 out of the Phenom will be a nice boost.

The 2.2Ghz phenom will be a nice boost for multithreaded apps, but it will be only worth it if your not planning to upgrade that rig to a faster competing intel product where you will need a new motherboard and maybe memory. (aka Q6600)
