Go for it dude! It would be interesting to see before/after benchmarks and pics you should definately do that.

I did somthing similar. By accident somone sent me an old mobo with a k6-I cpu in it, and it got me thinking about building an old rig. Which i did, and it evolved over time and became a new rig.

Dual PIII 600 - Tyan tiger 100 mobo with geforce 2 mx - 512mb pc100 ram
-->
Dual PIII 1ghz - Gigabyte GA6VD? with geforce 4 mx 4000 - 512mb pc100 ram
-->
Dual athlon MP 2000+ - MSI board... cant remember it, with geforce 4 TI4400 - 1GB DDR 333?, this was short lived as i then realised the cheapness of old opterons.
-->
Dual opteron 842's (1.6ghz) - MSI FAR7 (new version) with radeon 9800 PRO - 768mb ECC DDR 400.

Case, hdd, sound card etc all remained the same throughout.

Stuff i didnt need anymore i sold (for a profit somtimes) except the geforce 4 TI, its sitting in a pII 400mhz rig, rather lopsided :p but it works.

OK, finally found it: Upgradeware Slot-T compatibility table.

This only applies to their particular "Slot-T" adapter, but it may still provide some useful information. Specifically, their Slot-T works as is with the XPS T550 (unlike with some of Dell's other models which require a special version of the slocket).

They recommend BIOS A11 (or later) to use with their Slot-T adapter.

P.S. I used this slocket for one of my BX machines and it worked great.

I've read reports of the IWILL Slocket II working very nicely with this particular machine, so that's why I decided to go for it.

I'm wondering if it's truly necessary to upgrade the PSU. The Dell PSU may only be 200W, but it's a quality unit and I've personally never experienced a problem with a Dell PSU, and I've worked with a lot of the Dimensions that were in the old Palo Alto cases. What do you guys think? Would I actually see a difference with a 330W Antec "True" PSU over the stock one? I mean already have a brand new one, all I need is that adapter, but just wondering...

The PSU in my Dell I mentioned above is a 220w from '99 (a Dimension T600 XPS, I think). It's run 24x7 for 7 years now and currently has a power-hungry 5900ultra in it. I considered dropping in an Antec with an adapter to fit the Dell mobo, as well as maybe a PCP&C Dell-replacement, but, the dang thing is still running perfectly (games every day for the kids), so I'm not gonna drop any money into it. Yours should be fine.

Honestly, considering you are doing things like syncing an iPod, it makes sense to build a $500 PC, the utility is there if it is impacting tasks you do in your daily life, and the 3500+ priced out above will be many orders of magnitude faster than the Celery 1400 and will last you for a few years of light computing.

Why build a $500 PC? You can get a socket 754 mobo for $50 and throw in a sempron for under $50.. add some ram and ouy are good to go. Those $50 mobos are matx with onboard video, etc.

Because now he has A CHALLENGE and A PROJECT. More for the fun of it than the necessity.
