WWW opened to all 20 years ago today; world's first website restored

It was 20 years ago today that the World Wide Web was opened to all, setting off one of the biggest transformations in technology and altering the way we communicate. To celebrate the occasion, the creator has brought the world's first website back to life.

Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer scientist, launched the world's first website in the early 1990s. The site only included text and instructions on how to use the World Wide Web, an Internet network that was designed for universities to share research.

On April 30, 1993, the website was updated with a statement announcing that the source code for the World Wide Web would be available for everyone, turning "www" into a ubiquitous line for accessing the Internet.

The website eventually went offline. But on Tuesday, CERN, the organization behind the World Wide Web, restored the site to commemorate the anniversary. Users can check out the first website by heading to
http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html

Just tried going there. It won't open:'(
Apparently the site is too busy.

This post is clearly fake as VP Al Gore created the Internet. There is no way a university, CERN, or any individual other than uncle Al could have done this.

That would be an inconvenient truth.

I am sure Al Gore has invented many things in his life including global warming, the internet is not one of them.

Looks like they took it down. They could have at least used a "this page cannot be displayed" page for their 404 page to make it feel like it's 1999. :p

remove the . at the end of OPs link, I guess he's testing our HTML knowledge, or just doesn't care enough to change it. :p

The Internet is more than WWW. My old ass remembers using gopher in college. Or high school. I dont remember, it was too long ago. What were we talking about again?

A truly incredible use of technology, which benefits everyone who can access it. But such power must be used carefully and responsibly:
