On the news this morning, I noticed Iraqis waving the old Hammer & Sickle of the Soviet Union.

You've obviously never lived in a "commie" country.

Nope, but I've never lived in an ass-backward fvcked-up-on-Islam country either. We had a cold war with the commies and all they threated to do was nuke the shiat out of us. Both sides knew where they stood and despite years of brinkmanship we managed not to destroy the word. With these religions zealots there's not telling what the fvck they'll do in order to praise Allah. I think 9/11/01 gave us a pretty damn good idea just how crazy they are.

As anti-democratic as communist is, it generally provides at least some security of state. Communist countries don't generally have that much terrorism because the state controls so much of your daily life.

And in any case, a rogue communist country is easier to deal with than a rogue terrorist country. don't even bother mentioning vietnam as an example against this because we have much better weapons now that can prevent something like that (russia moving in large amounts of fixed surface-to-air missiles, tanks, etc). It' s guerilla warfare that destroys our army, not state-organized armies.

You know, I saw that on the TV earlier and I was wondering what all those red flags were all about. Apparently the Communist Party is the most popular opposition party in Iraq right now.

what if iraq does become a communist state, this could turn into another vietnam. So far democracy hasn't worked that well in iraq, people may be getting tired of the failed efforts to unite the country. So they might go back to what has worked, communism. under communism everyone is guaranteed food and shelter, so at least life would be stable. this is an alarming trend.

Wow, I'm surprised to hear this on AT. I hope you guys aren't referring to saddam as a "religious zealot" or "Jihad Islamic fundamentalist", because his government was secular and generally persecuted fundamentalist terrorist groups. At least that's my understanding. On the other hand, if you're referring to fundamentalists in general, then I suppose I would agree with you. The general belief (at least what we were taught in American public school) is that the reason the Cold War never escalated to a hot war was because both sides (US and USSR) believed the other was rational... each side knew very very bad things would happen if there was the slightest spark. Some argue that this is not so in the case of so called "rogue states" and independent fundamentalist terrorist organizations... as they aren't necessarily "rational".

Anyway, I'm still surprised to see some people still think Iraq under Saddam was an Islamic fundamentalist like Iran under the Ayatollah. There's no doubt Saddam was an evil dictator and all and probably deserves his fate, or worse. Just try not to make such heavy handed judgments without knowing the facts.
Also, references to 9/11 aren't really relevant as the administration still hasn't drawn any clear connection (only innuendo) between Saddam and the 9/11 hijackers.

Take it from someone who had a misfortune of living in Soviet Union for 19 years, you do not to be anywhere near commie-run country. Fundamentally, communist government is nearly identical to any fundamentalist religious ideology, meaning they are both extreme by nature and are willing to take extreme measures to supress anything or anyone who's disagreeing with them.

On a sidenote, Saddam was not a religious fundamentalist by any means. On the second note, there are plenty of Christian/Buddhist/Jewish religious fundamentalists as well, let's not be selective.
