What are the advantages/disadvantages of "v4 or below"?

Flashing 3rd part firmware. QOS

I just decided to buy the 54GL (basically a v.4 54G in new packaging) from NewEgg. It's got a $10 rebate and had free shipping. I've heard too many pricejacks / rip-offs like this and the price was right.

Basically, Linksys had to make public their code for the WRT54G router, because they used Linux and were bound by GPL to make the code available. A lot of people custom built their own firmware adding a lot of improvements to the default firmware. Here's a quick article on it:
ExtremeTech

However, the new v.5 of the WRT54G has a new proprietary firmware (non-Linux) that blows salty donkey balls. The v.4 was the last Linux-based WRT54G, so it's sought after (and often over priced / misrepresented) on eBay and the like.

Linksys responded by releasing the WRT54GL (linked above) which is based on Linux and still allows the use of the 3rd-party firmwares (although it kills the warranty if you brick it).
