It only has 2 PPro 200's in it, but i can pull those and ebay them off for close to what i paid for the whole thing prob. i'll take my scsi hd from my current server and buy a couple of Xeon PIII 550's for this baby. OMFG i'm sooo jazzed. This server FVCKING ROX. it is SOOOO much better than my Gateway 6400 Dual PIII 1 ghz setup. OMFG. my client has this and it is sooo much better than my gateway. i'm serious. this thing REALLY ROX.

I'll probably end up putting about $1000.00 into this server before it's up to what i want it to be but WOW, it's worth it. :)

Pentium Pros are Socket-8 and use the 440FX chipset.

Are PIII Xeons even supported by that chipset? And are they pin compatible?

good point. :( hmmm. i may have to buy a mb for this as well.

oh well. i bought it with the thought that the case and the ps alone are worth $99.00 so, i can't complain too much.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to put down your purchase. The case and PSU(s?) are definitely worth the 99 bucks.

Depending on what you use it for, a quad-PPro system can work quite well. Also, how big is the cache on each of the processors? They went from 256k up to 2MB I believe.

ya. i made kind of an impulse buy. i'd been looking for a netfinity for a long time. so when i saw this on ebay, with the buy it option for only $99.00 i didn't even think. i shoulda asked a bunch of questions, but :( oh well. like i said, it is an impulse buy, BUT i don't regret it. it had dual hot swappable power supply in it. that alone is worth the $99.00 to me.

i don't know how much cache on the PPro's unfortunately, obviously if it is the 2 mb variant, i'm in like flynn, then i'll just quad it up and use it just like that WITH the option of later swapping out the mb and going for the xeon's.

but this Case is OUTSTANDING. i really like ibm's workmanship on this thing.

yup

that's me.

well, it has dual hot swappable Power Supplies. It is a GREAT Server case. Great cooling. The dual PPro 200 IF it has 2mb cache will run just as fast for my purposes as my Dual PIII 1 ghz Gateway 6400 Server. it has 4 or more Hot swappable SCSI HD bays. hmmm what else.

this is an AMAZING server.

i dunno if anyone mentioned it yet, but i am gonna say it anyway. ppro's are socket8 cpus. xeon's are slot2 cpus. i think u might have a problem with that.

been mentioned :)

i don't mind, i also said, i'm happy just getting the case and the ps for this amount of money. i'll just upgrade to 4 PPro 200 w/ 2 mb cache. this will be more than enough for my needs, if i need more later i can buy the xeon mb and upgrade again. :)

sounds like a good deal, but did you catch this?

"Due to size, weight and the delicate nature of these machines we ship by freight company on a pallet only"

Shipping might be a bit expensive.

The NetFinity 7000's have a propretary motherboard design, with the memory and socket 8 processors stored on separate riser slots. I doubt that you would find a motherboard that would fit in it without some case customization.

The sweet thing about the Netfinity 7000, though, is the dual integrated SCSI controllers and 12 hot swap SCSI drive bays. You might not be able to upgrade the processors like you want to, but you certainly won't have a shortage of hard drive expansion space!

Oh, by the way, make SURE that the guy gives you the power cable for this server! It has a customized redundant power supply setup, that uses an oddly shaped 120V plug that connects both power supplies.

There are Socket 8 Overdrive procs that have been called "little Zeons"

They are 333 Mhz 512K full speed on-die cache - hence the little zeon name. They are VERY fast and I know that they can be used in dual configs.

:) <-----<----- PPRO Masta - needs to add it to system rig page.

Cool. where can i get some of those??

oh and btw, if i were to upgrade the mb. i'd look for Netfinity 7000 M10 pulls. :) it should fit in this case. Should being the operative word. :)

You can get them here.

And RGN is right, they are supa fast compared to the PPro's that are in there.

Eh... I doubt it. The Netfinity 7000 M10's have an even weirder motherboard design that the 7000's do. The ones that I've worked on had a separate board (connected to the main board by a ribbon cable) in the bottom of the case that held the CPU's. If you look at the pictures, you'll also see that most of the M10's have 4 top-mounted drive bays, whereas the original 7000's had 12 bottom-mounted drive bays. The boxes are about the same size, but most of the simularities end there.

I've got one of these coupled with a voodoo5 PCI, and it pulls 40fps in q3 at 8x6 full detail. not bad for a 5 year old machine... :D
