I never realized how absolutely positively shitty 128kbps mp3s sound! Wow...I just took my Senn's from my home stereo up to the computer and plugged them in. I have nice speakers, but damn you can really tell the difference between 128kbps and 192! Blech! :disgust:

Welcome to the anal music club! Soon you will be complaining that real CDs don't sound as good as live music. It never ends, beware!!!

Oh I've been a member of that club for quite some time. I'm actually to the point now where I like the sound of records more than CDs. :)
But I've never really compared mp3 qualities with a nice speaker/headphone setup until now.

Actually, NOT only with Sennheisers. I can hear a distinct difference when I'm wearing my Sony headphones. --Street style. Also, LoB, you mentioned hearing dog whistles blowing? I absolutely CAN hear them. They are terrible. --And deafeningly loud. Some people can.

Design-Dawg: Dog whistles are hell.

My University had this bird deterrent machine that was a box that made a sound humans can't hear to drive birds away. I couldn't go within 20 feet of the building without my head feeling like it was going to explode!

I actually do hear dog whistles and that type of thing. My TV, when it's set on the Video inputs, makes a horrendous screeching noise that no one can hear but me. Creeeeeeepy. :Q

Yep. TVs too. Big time, some of them. --And monitors do it BAD sometimes. This past summer, when I was sanding bowling lanes, I was about halfway down a lane, facing the pins, and I heard the AWFUL sound of a high-pitched squeal. I immediately turned around to see my boss behind the counter, having just turned on all of the telescore monitors to watch TV during the lunch break. When he asked me how I knew, I told him it was the high-pitched sound they were making, and he didn't believe me. He couldn't hear them, and the sound was EXCRUCIATING for me.

Hey guys, what's up?

I can hear the noises you're talking about. I mean the aggravating high-pitched noise TVs and the such make. It's just endlessly annoying! I hate it! Sad thing is, *most* people don't notice it for some reason. Like it's just not there eh? Gives me bloody headaches sometimes.

I hear it on all TVs and some monitors, some TVs are worse than others, like my friend's TV.. Whenever I go over there it takes me a while to get used to the damn noise, and when I leave my head usually hurts a bit. My TV has the noise, but it's not as annoying at least.

I have an Optiquest V55 monitor that constantly emits some sort of noise similar to that of the TVs, but not as intense. I've gotten completely used to it, but when I first got the monitor, it was really annoying. The noise it makes when switching modes is also quite annoying...

konichiwa, I have to agree on 128kbps MP3s sounding bad. Although I only have cheap 4-year old 120w speakers (that's "120w", not really 120w), I can still notice it, on some songs more than others.. I can only imagine the difference on high quality speakers. Whenever I downloaded MP3s, I always tried to get 192-320kbps.

And here I thought those sounds in my head were just my suppressed inner being. Oh well.

What's really annoying is when other people don't believe you can here TV's. Dog whistles might explain those sensations like aliens are communicating using your brain as a relay. And yes, I would know, just don't tell my psychiatrist!

I always thought (128kbs) MP3s were just for the car or portable player.

For serious audiophile listening even CDs won't do. Records do sound better - especially direct cut LPs.

Yeah, you can really tell the difference between 128kbps mp3s and the higher quality ones. I have Sennheiser headphones, and these babies rock (unless of course you have a low quality sound file)!

Sennheisers rule!
my 580s are driven by a musical fidelity x-can v2 tube amp.
Its usually hooked up to my cd player, but i ocassionally run my comp through the amp.
Even with the senn's drivern by my sound card, it sounds great.

I can honestly say that I've never heard a speaker that is more musical and accurate than my setup.

I'm in the process of replacing most of my 128kbps MP3s with 160+ kbps. Lucky hard drives are cheap these days. You can really hear the difference, especially if you use the Winamp 2.22 Fruanhoffer decoder.

Sure, the Fraunhofer codec in the newer Winamps is much better than the old decoder, but the MAD plugin is 100 times better than anything I've ever heard:

konichiwa: all I have to say is WOW!

The difference is HUGE!!! Thanks! :D

OK...my SBLive sucks or something. I can't get MAD to output at 24-bit in Win2K even after making the adjustments to the Wave Output. Using Wave Output from Winamp 2.7 (dll version 2.2).

Hmm...I don't know, sorry. You might want to try asking about your SB Live! on the alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.d newsgroup, they'll probably be able to help you. I think the author of MAD frequents that newsgroup.
