When I went to Japan, I also needed a Visa...... which comes from the Japanese Consulate. I was going for business trip so rules may have been different.

Better check!

luckily I just happened to have a "how much do passports cost" book right next to me! Hmm, let me see... what page was rushing on again?

Do your own dirty work, lazy ass! 😛

dude, shut up

Luckily, his "How to Uselessly Respond to ATOT Posts" book was right by his computer. 😉

heh, rock on

This question is exatly how AT is going to hell. Nobody does their own work anymore; they just come here ask, and sit on their lazy asses until someone answers it. Oh well. Good luck getting your passport on time. Have fun, and don't be frightened when you close the stall door and realize that there's no toilet 😛

the best part about that is if it really was a problem, no one would help me or reply....seeing as how there's 30 posts in 3 mins, I think it's ok

so you planned a trip to japan without checking how long it takes to get a passport...

then you are going to japan for almost a month, but cant afford a passport if it will cost over $100?

😕

i got my passport expedited when i went on a trip to thailand.

i got the form online and went to my local post office. THEY ARE ANAL! i took my picture there (mistake no. 1, it was a ripoff, go do it at kinkos or something) and they wanted the passport fee in a check and the expedite/picture fee in CASH. luckily i had the BF with me to spot me the extra cash i needed.

remember to get your ORIGINAL birth certificate. they will send it back to you. when i expedited mine it took about a week to come back to me. pretty fast.

you can also check to see what other places in your area has a passport acceptance place - the LA federal building wouldn't let me do it, since it was the closest, so i had to go find the post office with a window. they also have very strict hours about the passport acceptance. and don't wait in the post office regular line, just go up to the passport window, or you'll be waiting forever.

ohhhh, damn. Thanks for the info, I'll need a check and my ORIGINAL birth certificate then! Gotta get it from San Diego

I have a job but I can't work while I'm in Japan so yeah, money is an issue but it's almost easier if I don't go than have to pay an extra $100. My dad told me he knew of an over night place but it's $300 so I was just making sure no one recommended that.

how much is it usually?

Why don't you call the passport office and ask them. They might be able to answer a little better.

I just got my daughter (18 months) her passport. It cost ~$85 and took about 3 weeks

i did the same thing when i went to the philippines in 99

i paid like 60 bucks to get it expidited(sp?) - passport took 2 weeks

$85 for a non-renewed passport.
$55 for a renewed passport.
$60 additional for expediated service.
+2nd day shipping cost.

So can be from $145+shipping to $115+shipping.

ahhhh, totemo takai! Doable but not desireable, could be worse!

I will but I don't have time now. I am actually leaving right now to finish my take home final that's due at 4. I was going to just make the thread and leave but my dad has called 3 times since then so I haven't strayed far from my computer.

But now I am leaving, and I thank everyone for their help. I guess I'll eat the $ and get it expedited!

The funny thing here is that it was sent in the regular mail. No signature, no special protection.

I can't take a pair of nail scissors on a plane, but a fully legimate passport is sent in regular mail where it can be intercepted and stolen. 😕

hahahahahahaha such an american thing to do

geee im going to visit another country, what all do i need? Camera, bathin suit, toothbrush....

I didn't need one when I went to Canada, guess they saw my plaid flannel and thought I was just a lumberjack returning home 😀 (I kid!) Not sure how things are in Europe, and frankly couldn't care less, but the US is huge and borders only two countries. You don't exactly hop in the car and drive a few hours if you're in the mood for international travel. Being less familiar with the process is in no way something to be ashamed of, but I realize stupid people need trends to follow, and hating the US has unfortunately become the bell-bottoms of the early 21st century 🙁
