I have about 500 songs backed up on an old USB hard drive/mp3 player. When I try to copy-paste them over, it does about half of them then says "Cannot copy _________ : Data error (cycle redundancy check)." Does this mean I have to rerip all my songs?

There's only 500; doesn't sound all that bad.

That said, it might be just one or two songs that are holding you up. Have you tried going up to the point where there's a song messing up, skipping the next couple of tracks, and selecting the rest to see what happens?

I just got that error 10 minutes ago when I tried installing something from a cd. I think the disk was scratched though.

Most likely. With the CRC error, it sure sounds like file corruption. I'd give it a shot on another PC's USB port, just to rule out something funny there, but unless someone else in here has some ideas, you'll likely have to re-rip.

Yes, I tried multiple songs, which for some reason were all bad. And the funny thing is - it got worse. I was copying them onto my partitioned backup drive and when I tried to copy a song onto my regular drive (that I knew worked) it crapped out on me. Hmm...

Woo Hoo!!!

Glad you recovered the data. I'm guessing it's a bad USB port. Usually CRC errors are due to bad media/corrupted files, but bad hardware would render the data just as unreadable. Do other USB devices work in that port? Was the port that worked on this PC or on another PC? If it was on another PC, it could be the USB controller on the MOBO, otherwise, it may be just that one port that's bad.
