This is effed up. Last night I was playing CS:S and I heard some clicks from my hard drive. :( Then it froze up but it was late so I was like fvck it. So this morning I fire up my computer and go to rip a DVD and come back and it was froze. Try to reboot but it freezes at the Loading XP Pro screen.

However, note that my main windows\programs drive was a 80GB WD. I thought this was kaput, which wouldn't surprise me considering its actually a replacement to another kaput WD. And at worst I thought I'd only lose a few My Documents stuff.

My data drive OTOH is a month old Seagate Barracuda 250gb. I thought this was fine the whole time considering that the lockups were due to accessing my main 80GB WD drive, since the 250GB only has mp3s, video, and a lot backed up crap, and wouldn't for instance be accessed when playing CS:S. So here's what happened:

1) I unplugged the 80gb windows drive I thought was kaput and loaded only my 250gb data drive with the Windows XP cd. Yet I got to the partition screen and the whole drive showed blank!! So I exited the Windows XP setup.
2) I loaded XP on a spare 8gb drive by itself, then once XP was installed shut down and plugged in my 250gb drive, figuring that maybe it showed up weird in XP setup considering it was not a primary partitioned drive.
3) Yet booting the 250gb as slave with my temporary XP install, it shows up as if its brand new. Clicking on it asks "Not formatted, do you want to?" I tried running chkdsk from the command prompt on my 250gb data drive but it says "file system is raw, chkdsk cannot be used" or something like that.

So I installed PartitionMagic Pro 7 on this temp XP install but when trying to load it with the 250gb drive in there, it says something about EZ-Drive is messed up on it, then another error about engine not loading, then it quits. PM 7 works fine with the 80gb as slave, but the 250gb appears FVCKED, WHICH IS VERY VERY BAD. I haven't even tested if my 80gb (which I thought was hosed but now I'm able to get files off it with it as slave) can boot windows again, but HOW THE HELL DID MY 250GB GET ERASED?

It is detected fine from the BIOS but nothing that I've done shows that there is any data left on the drive, which really sucks.

Should I try some sort of recovery program? If so, what? Problem is I have nowhere near enough hard drive space to save everything from that drive, but it is critical that I get like 30gb from there, especially my music collection from 2000.

I'm getting a program from a buddy called GetDataBack. He had a 160gb WD fail him but got everything back. Hopefully I can do the same, but now I need a drive with 150gb free! :(

Ehhh what??... 160gb is too small for me and this thing is like brand-new, I could definitely get a replacement, but losing all that stuff would SUCK hardcore. I'm about 11 minutes from being down with the data recovery scan, but then I gotta gather up roommates' hard drives and it'll be a PITA to save 150gb of stuff over 3 or 4 different drives (since no one has a lot of free space).
