Well, I don't agree with that entirely. The study of different religions shouldn't be prohibited in schools - indoctrination should be prohibited. The government doesn't anymore have the right to tell me I MUST learn bible studies than tell me I CAN'T learn bible studies.
If you want your child to learn bible lessons because you want them to lead a bible-guided lifestyle you need to send them to a religious school, absolutely.
Something on religious history, perhaps, like the origins of the religions, and how they spread, that would be acceptable, so long as it's presented as a historical teaching. It can't be anything like, "So there were all these other heathen religions, sending all their followers to eternal damnation, but then there was THIS religion, which was finally the one correct religion, which you should all believe, or you'll suffer."
I had a basic history class in college, and one section of it was on the origins of the major religions. it was presented quite objectively, with no one religion being made out to be the "bad guy," and no favoritism shown toward any other.
But of course, this would cause some turmoil in this ignorant society. "Our religion wasn't founded in the Mideast! It was founded by God! It always existed!!!!" or, "Those filthy Buddhist monks, bald heads, what the hell's their problem? They killed millions of Jewish people during the Holocaust! Everyone knows that the one true god is Zeus!" Various ignorant crap like that would likely be spewed forth at the school administrations.
Ignorance is one disease with a mind of its own, and it fights for self-preservation, adapting more quickly than any organism, shielding itself from the blinding light of reality.

I don't mind them teach about religious texts in a historical context as they did have a huge impact on history.
However, when I run into people that want the bible "preached" in school I always ask them if they think that religious texts from other religions should be taught there as well. Their answers are usually quite amusing and hypocritical.
With that said, I don't have a problem with what Chuck said, and I am an atheist. He is entitled to his opinion and if he can get paid expressing it then more power to him.
Well see, you can't teach those other texts, because they're not the "correct" religion. There's only one true religion. You know the one.
