Both of my son's 'puters have voodoo3 vid cards, they've been great. They've run everything from DOS to Glide to DirectX of any flavor without complaint or any twiddling, driver updates, nada.

Today, however, my oldest(8) got a new game as a Christmas present- "bugdom" by ODI software, written in Open GL. It won't play on either machine, slightly different symptoms. The sound is there on one box with a black screen, the other offers an explanation of "Q3 view_start rendering failed" and "Q3style_Submit failed" with no sound. These are entirely different machines- one intel, the other AMD, both have soundblaster live cards.

Running it down in control panel, they both show open gl support, with a variety of options, none of which I understand. It occurs to me that none of their game titles are open gl, not that I recall, anyway.

Any help, or am I just screwed? Any references, places to look, anything?

I really don't need to give it up for new vid card(s) right now....

These are in a MAC? A Google search shows THIS review of the game.

<< Hardware Demands:
The hardware demands for Bugdom are pretty stiff. If you don't have an iMac or a G3-powered Mac, then you might as well forget it. A 233MHz G3 with a Rage II chip is the bare minimum that you could (or at least should) play this game with, and even then you wouldn't be getting Bugdom in its full graphic glory. Ideally your G3 should be something beyond the first generation iMacs and G3s. A Rage Pro chip (and preferably a Rage 128) is a near necessity with at least 4MB of VRAM, (see Bug Report for more information on this topic). Also, gamers should note that Bugdom can only be used with 3D acceleration cards from ATI. Because the game requires 2D graphics as well as 3D, Voodoo card owners are out of luck. On top of these requirements, you'll need at least 32MB of RAM.

I presume this is a rather old game?
As that statement makes it sound like 3dxfx cards don't offer any 2D support... which hasnt been true since the days of the Voodoo 1/2.

Actually, I have seen some newer games like Links 2001 and Myst III
warn that you can't use a V3 due to it's no 32bit 3d support.

Victory! It runs! Looks good, too, smooth frame rates, nice color....

Special Thanks to Eplebnista! The bugdom faq page led me to glsetup.com, where I got what I needed.

Bugdom has become a favorite in the computer lab at his school, so his mom ditifully chased down a copy from a webvendor. It was originally written for Macs, then again in opengl for pc's. I suspect it's old.

So now my son's comments-

"How come it plays faster?"
"It doesn't look like this at school."
"Why are the colors so bright?"
"Wow! I can see more stuff in this one!"

Thanks again....
