OH No - not again...

First off hello to everyone. I've been using the Anadtech web site for many years and lurking in these forums unssen and unheard for a similar time. I've finally bitten the bullet and joined up.

I need some quick advice please. This is another "please recommend a motherboard" post.

Obviously I have read and will reread everything I can find on this site on this topic so I'm not being lazy. I also know there is a seasonal article due out anytime on this site concerning motherboards.

I just need to be extra careful not to make a mistake here.

My eldest son has recently started work and has been saving up for months to buy the components for a new computer for himself. He is badgering me to shortlist components and drive him the necessary 50 miles to our supplier to get the bits, then build it with him. My natural way of doing things is to take lots of time and get it right. He is - well imagine a terrier on steroids chasing a rat. In any case I need to hurry up and decide what he should buy - but its his money and I would feel bad if I made a bad mistake on choice.

I have decided on an "Intel Core 2 Duo E6600" which looks like a good compromise between power and cost. I see from people's sigs that many people have these so what i am asking is for a confident recommendation of motherboard based on experience with this processor. Particularly I am interested about warnings on mobo revision levels and fitting issues. I never overclock. I always use big heavy cases and big heavy power supplies. I never use case windows so I don't care what it looks like. I rank utter stability as the primary requirement. The PC is likely to be on for 24 hours per 7 days a week. Quiet running is also important and I see now that some mobos use heat pipes rather than fans - any comments. (Its been a couple of years since I last built a rig). We are probably looking at onboard sound and network (Onboard wireless?). Video card will probably be a big new DX10 nvidia beastie. I always a lot on good quality memory. We are probably aimimg at 2GB or more. OS will be XP (perhaps media centre). Won't touch Vista for a few years yet. Probably.

Thanks for any help you can give.

A couple of questions -
How much money will be available for the motherboard?
Will SLI be used? Either now or in the future.

Hi Jibboom,

It is unlikely that SLI will be required. I have a bad feeling about SLI and some older games software - might be wrong on that but it is a gut feeling. We are not looking to build a system around SLI.

Budget isn't too much of an issue - I don't want to waste money but I believe the mobo is worth spending a bit extra on. As a guide figure £100 to £150 (GBP) perhaps.

Thanks.

Okay, the ASUS P5WDH seems to be a very popular board with C2D systems at the moment if you're going to be using a single card, I used it in the system I built for my brother (link in sig) and it's performing just fine. It has no fans and is heatpipe cooled. You should be able to find it for between £140-£150. Alternatively the Gigabyte DS3 is quite popular and is under £100, though I've never tried it myself.
