Make sure you get the extended warranty.. and prepare to wait almost a month for a replacement from Microsoft.

Last night on the 'phone MS told me it would be 10-12 business days total: 4-5 BD to get a shipping label / box to me, 2 BD for repair, 4-5 more BD to send it back. I wouldn't quite call that "almost a month" but let's see if they're true to their word!

Hahaha.. that's what they told me too ;)

Call me crazy, but for $400 dollars is it stupid to expect a product that should last for longer than a year without having to worry about BUYING an extended warranty?

Not to hijack the topic, but I didn't think this really warranted its own: My original classic Xbox has been having issues lately. A friend and I were playing through the first Halo and all of a sudden the sound got really scratchy and we rounded a corner and the walls were all psychadelic orange and green and hella trippy. The game hit a checkpoint to quicksave and froze. I'm thinking a hard drive problem?

thats pretty standard on consoles. i think they don't make much money selling them.

hence the reason , why i got the bb protection plan. i know its not usually worth it but it saved me money.

Hah, this thread made me call up Microsoft and purchase a 2-year extended warranty ($60 USD) last night. They're pretty weird about it - I just gave them my personal info and the Xbox 360's serial number and I was set. How would they know that I'm not doing this so I can turn around tomorrow* and send in my 360 for repair because it was already busted?

* I believe the service rep stated that the warranty takes effect in 30 days.

Well the fact that to get thier warranty you still have to be under the 90 days.. so frankly they dont care if youre gonna turn it in tomorrow...
becasue either way you were covered.

That's fine when consoles are built to last (Nintendo). But xbox 360 and original xbox are too complex and under-engineered to have such a short warranty.

*Knocks on wood*

I've not had any issues other than with Oblivion. My 360 would lock up a LOT during that game, but never locks up in any other games. I'm also quite glad I purchased the extended warranty on mine.

My Xbox 360 is seven months old, and I had my extended warranty purchase approved last night.

$400 bucks seems like a lot of money for something to crap out because of heat. Seems like a defect in the design

FREE REPAIR FOR ALL XBOX 360s MANUFACTURED PRIOR TO 1/1/06

if your box is one of these call them back!
they are officially announcing this today...

get your money back!

Is there an official announcement somewhere? A forum post doesn't inspire confidence (do you believe everything you read on AT forums? :D).

to all you 360 owners, where do you leave your 360? and do you have any coolers for it (like the intec one)
i leave mine out in the open on the floor (wooden floor) next to my TV stand. i still hear loud fan noises. console froze on me three times. once on dead rising, twice on SF2:Hyper Fighting (while playing ranked match too :|)

it's fine lately, but i only had mine for 2 months. mine is manufactured in March 2006

I just got off the with 1800-4my-xbox

They told me no warranty past 90 days I have a unit that was built on 10-13-05 and has ring of death on it..

So I call SHINS on the warranty extention..Unless proven otherwise when microsoft fixes my xbox 360 for free

Update: I called back and told them I read a thread on xbox.xom forums about the free repair for units made before 2006.. and sure enough she let me rma it for free
