D'oh! I had vsync on :) Changed fps_max to 100, and voila, its pinned @ 100 no matter how hard I try to get the framerate to decrease :) Saweeeeet, /me happy.

xp1500+ @ 1.71ghz
Ti4200 @ 270/540
mushkin pc2700 level2 @ 22251

All on stock voltages :D

Any ideas?? Btw, the first time you take out a whole 5-6 person team completely by yourself in one round, you just feel damn good :)
Turn off VSYNC, very important. Also, make sure you find a refresh rate tool which does detect your card and will override the refresh rates for you. CS, will easily, be 100 FPS at nearly all times on your box, as long as you follow those two rules. Last, but not least, find out what your max refresh rate is for the resolution you play CS in -- this is more the limiting factor for your gaming.

I quit CS an all my gaming activity for a number of reasons. Here are a few other "tweaks" for your FPS.
1. Turn of net_graph 1,2,3 all of it. NEt_graph itself lowers the frame rate.
2. In console type fps_max or Max_fps I forgot. The number should come out to 72 for most computers. Switch it to 100 by typing "max_fps 100, or fps_max 100)
3. Download the latest drivers for you video card.
4. Personally I prefer OpenGL for my vieing mode on CS.
5. Type "gamma 20" in console
6. typing "timerefresh" in console represents the actually FPS you are currently running.
7. Turn off all unnessary options such as spray paint. pr0n is bad for you!!!

Other neat tips and tricks for CS.
1.Type con_color "255 255 255 in CS to change that ugly yellow font color into white. Experiment with the numbers and get different colors.
2.Downloading Benedict comic characters are hilarious! You should DL them too!
3.The glock is a good gun I dunno what your talking about IMHO. Its all about the sound. USP has a deeper more powerful sound to it. the Glock just sounds like a water pistol, I suggest changing the sound or playing without sound.
4. Download scripts and beat the rush. I like Nextwish.org's scripts.

Please forgive and correct my errors. :)

Guys, what does V-sync do exactly? I'd like to get a higher frame rate, but I don't want it to look crappier.

I believe the V-sync synchronizes or locks your game fps to the refresh rate of your monitor. So if your monitor refresh rate is 85hz, your max fps will be 85fps with V-sync on.

So, whatever helps you get a higher fps will improve the video of your game.

Download the Day of Defeat mod instead. For some reason I never got into CS, but DoD was the one that stole my soul. Very well balanced weaponry and the teams were generally equal (especially is the servers limited snipers).

I can't believe I lost my half life CD :( No longer have a CD key and have formatted since last install :| I guess I'll have to buy ANOTHER one! I bet Valve or Sierra came into my house and stole it so I'd buy another one.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I am also trying to get into CS and DoD (CS retail was included with my Radeon 8500)... I have been training with the Pod-Bot and Sturmbot, respectively. My marksmanship is getting pretty good, but I still get surprised by them sometimes. In other words, my defense sucks. :(

What is a good way to play online as a n00b without pissing people off?

Getting good shots against the predictable bots is one thing, but going up against a human is another. Sure, shooting is the same, but predicting their actions isn't. The best thing to do is simply play on server, with people, at peak hours. To ensure you aren't pissing other people off, accomplish the goals and don't camp for too long. The only way you won't be a n00b is to play, memorize maps and just do what other people are doing. Of course, like lemmings, following other people can get you killed, but at least you are part of the team and will be learning.

Here's another tip: Don't play on friendly fire servers first. If you haven't played online yet (or much), you won't know the choke points well and the ways to defend or attack with them. With a friendly fire server, you are more likely to hit a friendly, with a grenade, a few misplaced shots, etc. Once you are more comfortable playing, graduate to a FF server.

Playing CS with FF is a completely different game than with FF off. Just find a server with FF, StatMe and Wulf's Law or ATAC.

What maps do most of you play on? I've been playing on almost exclusively de_dust, but now it's getting a little tiring. There was this one cool castle map I played but I forgot the name of it.

de-dust used to be my fav, till I over-played it. Now my fav is the old cs_assault map.
Castle map is probably the new map that came with cs 1.5, de_piranesi.

Guys- you have to think about this! CS is addictive. I have enough friends who play CS day and night and don't do anything else and look dead everyday because they stay up until like 2am playing it. I'm quite serious. CS is a bad thing to get addicted to. For like half a year I played, and then I realized what it really was, so I quit. Recently I've had this urge to start playing again, but I know that I'd just get addicted again. It's so tempting to start again, because I know I can just pop the disc in, update, and connect to a server, but I've lost a lot just from playing it for that period of time before, and almost lost my girlfriend, sadly. This game is evil.

On the bright side, I gave my cd and cd key to someone so I have no way to play again other than to get or buy another key.

Vash is right. At the start of a round CT's have a USP which is actually my favorite handgun to have(fires fast and holds alot of bullets), where as the T's have the Glock which is the weakest gun in the game. They should at least start the T's out with P228's. As far as the AK47 vs the M4A1 Colt Carbine. I actually favor the AK over the Colt. I am actually more accurate with it and it seems to do more damage(at least to me it does). I have been playing CS for almost 3 years and can't wait to see some new weapons. I hear there is gonna be an M-16(to compete with the AK in price for the CT's) but they should add a new T gun and I haven't heard anything on that yet. Only new thing I heard for T was a Molitof CockTail. Who here has been playing long enough to remember when the Colt had a scope like the Aug does now?

I definately dont recommend turning off Vsync though Vash. It has been proven to ruin the visual quality of the game or any game for that matter. Use a refresh rate fix like this one. This one will permanately fix your refesh rate problems. It did for me I run at 100 fps solid with VSync ON!!!

Come on guys! The Glock isnt that bad if you know how to use it. You can switch between burst and semi-automatic with it. I'll go head to head with you using USP and me with Glock. Yes the USP is more accurate, but if you can get close with the Glock, you got your opponent!

Already? Geez; I can only get headshots with a TMP or something else with low kickback. Anything else goes all over the place, even if I just "tap it" like people say to do.
And how long are you playing this? A few weeks? I've been trying for 2 years and I still have trouble keeping my kills above my deaths. Heck, I usually run a 1:2 K:D ratio.
Still an ok game though; wonder what CS1.6 will bring.

Been playing about 2 weeks now...isnt THAT difficult to HS. I can do like i did today and play on a somewhat "less skilled" server, and run like 2:1, 3:1 ratio. Or I can play on a server with a few clan players thrown in and a bunch of guys who are pretty freakin awesome, and then I do like 1:1 or 1:2 :D

And oh yes, the AK is indeed quite the killer :)

Yes, your kill ratio will depend to a large extent on the quality of the players present(or lack thereof), as well as their ping and your ping.

Getting headshots is actually pretty easy. The most important thing for everyone to understand is why you aren't getting them in the first place. Here are quick tips which will increase your headshots:

1. STOP moving. If you want to hit someone accurately, STOP moving and take a shot (after your crosshairs go back to normal). At a complete stop, after your crosshairs are normal, your gun is deadly accurate.

2. Aim for the chest. Far too many CS players I have played against, watched, etc that are basically looking at the ground. The more you are looking at their chest/neck/head, the better chance you have of hitting those spots.

3. Learn the amount of recoil necessary to hit someone in the head at full auto, at the distance you are firing.

Running headshots happen, but not nearly as often as controlled, burst blasts near the dome. #2 is what I see much more frequently than anything else. New players (and some that have played a long time) tend to look at people's waist and not at the chest. Once you are looking at chest level, just practice looking at chest level through all walls/textures/doors, etc. When you get this down, your quick bursts will drop people FAST. If you can master that, the headshots are mucho easier.

#3 is tough. Up close, aim for the head, no doubt -- the first shot MUST count. When you are at say 10-30feet, that is about medium distance and headshots greatly depend on where you start to fire at them and how much recoil you compensate for. At anything longer than medium distance, single shots are the only real key to hitting someone in the dome on a consistant basis. As much as people may not believe in CS, aiming your shots are the head is very easy to do, even when you are being fired at. Pistols round is where headshots shine, anyone that gets lots of headshots in the first round usually knows what they are doing and will continue to do so throughout the game.

Some people claim some guns are better at making headshots aren't completely wrong, but they do have a point. With #2, many people aim at the incorrect area and their gun of choice's recoil will help them with the headshot. Watch any good player and they'll dish the dome love with virtually ANY weapon.
