Oh my God - my notebook is D-E-A-D! Help!

Last night I went to bed with my notebook running smooth and quiet on my desk like it always does. When I woke up in the morning, the screen was blank, athough the system appeared to be working fine. After restarting several times, I noticed that I could see what was on the screen VERY VERY fanitly, as if the pixesl were still switching, but the backlight was completely turned off. I tried all kinds of things, including pushing on that special spot between the 6 and 7 keys, but to no avail.

So, I got stupid and opened up the case to see what I could see. Of course, nothing appeared out of place, so I put it back together. Now, when I turn on the notebook, it doesn't even POST. The power comes on and the DVD drive just clicks over and over and over again.

Of course, the system is about 2 months out of warranty. So, what should I do?

At this point I know I;m going to have to spend some $$$ to get this fixed, but where should I take it? on the HP website, it just directs me to my local Best Buy and CompUSA for qualified service. I have heard horror stories about getting service there, so I was hoping someone might have a better reccomendation. I really can't afford to be without my computer for too terrible long.

Thanks,
A

So basically your backlight burned out on your notebook? Check ebay for replacement parts to see what is out there and available. You can probably fix it yourself just as good as best buy could.

Well, now it's not just the backlight. After opening it up and putting it back together, it won't even POST. I talked shop with the guys at a very good local computer store, which is HP authorized, and they are going to do a diagnostic for only $20, which seems reasonable.

Still, I went onto the HP PartSurfer site to see how much replacement parts cost, and they charge $750 for a new motherboard. Great.
