oh my god...my car warrenty sucks

Alright...if you recall from my earlier thread, my car broke down, engine needs to be replaced. This happened 3 weeks ago today. I just got a loaner car from the garage cuz its gonna be a few MORE weeks yet. I also found out that my warrenty company is the biggest bunch of assholes alive. They don't pay diagnostics, they only pay repairs. And they are demanding that the garage tear the engine apart to find out exactly whats wrong. They know the engine needs to be replaced, which is covered, but they still demand they tear it apart. That alone is gonna cost me about $700-$800. And then, once they actually start the repairs, they only pay $40/hr, and the garage charges $70, so im gonna have to pay $30/hr then. Oh yea, and they will only pay for half of the $900 engine. I'm better off paying for the engine myself and letting the garage put it it right away, it will be about the same cost and alot faster....Cars Protection Plus is the devil. :|:|:|:|

Sucks, did you buy it from the dealer when you bought the car?

I was lucky with my ex warrenty it save me tons of cash, the car broke down every other week got rid of it a month ago.

I will never buy a dodge again.

I don't really have the money now, I have to borrow money for the repairs from my parents...I was going to get a new one over the summer, so now I'm putting in a new engine to use for 5 months. Yay.

I got the car from a little used car place, the warrenty is from another company...the car is being repaired at the local GM dealer.

Oh man that's BRUTAL. I was looking at a 3rd party warranty on the maxima because it has only powertrain left but damn I'd rather not bother if any of them are like that! You would be better off just paying the garage and not bothering with the stupid warranty.

My Paretns bought a 7 year/70K extended on our Maxima back in '95. We used it for the Fuel injectors around 65K, there were no other bennies from the warranty.

I will ALSO never buy a Dodge again. They try to sport their vehicles with flashy designs, but their vehicles don't hold up over normal wear-and-tear.

3rd party repair warranty = Ouch! 🙁

If you are gettign a new car this summer then don't get your car repaired. Going without a car for five months is relatively simple.

Well....the first few months, during school, I need the car to drive to work, I don't know if you saw my Septa thread, but it takes me 4 hours to get to work by bus. 4. And then over the summer, at home, thre is no public transportation...

Is it not possible to hitch a ride with a co-worker or friend until you get the new vehicle. Same thing when you go home. Just a suggestion and it might not be practical for you. Hope things get worked out.

Well, I'm the only one stupid enough to work this far away from the store 😛 Next closest guy to me isn't even in the city, I'm 15 minutes in the wrong direction for him....technically, i COULD transfer stores, or just get a job on campus, but I'd really prefer not...were it not for work it wouldn't be a problem, I didn't have a car for the first term down here. At home though...I don't know if I could live without my car.

Wow, I googled them and couldnt get any real details about the plan. They do seem sort of fly by night.

In any case they should cover the teardown if the cause is covered. The diagnosis is a blown engine, that's on your dime. If the cause is due to abuse, then whole thing should be on your dime. If it is wear and tear or defect, that's their money. this is pretty standard for 3rd party warranties.

Did the shop say why it was blown, or how? like a thrown rod, or what? If they said it threw a rod, for example, all they need to know is if it had enough oil in it and what the oil change interval was.

Might be time to get some legal advice...

The money you pay for most extended warranties would be better put into the bank and saved for a rainy day fund.

I have yet to come out ahead on extended warranties. I don't bother anymore.

I had about the same thing happen to me. My engine blew up in my 4runner I used to own. I had to pay to have the motor tore down...cost me around 500 bucks.
They also made me take it to a "approved" shop on there list. It ended up being some back yard mechanic that didnt have a clue on what he was doing. I had to take the truck back several times because it wouldnt run right, which btw it never did run right.

For 90% of the people that is true. What this really is insurance. The insurance is much better if you get the Factory backed version when you buy a car. I've had it both ways, it has and has not payed for itself on seperate occasions.

It is also hedging against big expenses down the road. Most people wont put the money away for the future and forcing themselves to save it ahead of time in installments works for them.

Even though you may end up shelling out near a grand over the cost of the warranty, the warranty company will be paying twice or more for a new or rebuilt engine. In that case the warranty still has more than paid for itself.

The only two things I know of in a car that justify a warranty are the engine and tranny.

Sure, how many engines die by 100K miles?

I haven't seen or heard of one in a long time. Most seem to be dying at the 150K to 200K point these days.

That's why they offer extended warranties up to 100K miles 🙂

Where mine paid off was on a door lock solenoid, oxygen sensor, and a 4wd actuator motor. Together they went over a grand.

I had another truck that I wish had an extended warranty on, it went through 2 AC compressors and half a dozzen other things that would have been covered.

One of the best things about an extended warranty is that it makes get the recommended services. A good example is transmissions, almost nobody i know has their trans serviced like it should. With EW you get that done, and usually it will hold up.
