Hi all,

I went to dslreports to compare cable modem users on the east coast. I live in halifax, NS and have Eastlink cable provider.

many people here are big on eastlink but when I did speed tests I never never get over 80 KB/s download speeds.

I then did a line test and here are the results.......http://www.dslreports.com/quality/nil/911939

I feel cheated after so many people have said good things about my cable provider🙁 THis sucks!!

Gotta remember cable internet is a shared medium. Sounds like your particular area has a big number of cable subscribers. I don't think any cable provider guarantees any bandwidth over dialup. If you are big into games or just want better bandwidth, a 384/128 adsl connection will be at par price-wise with cable and will offer you guaranteed bandwidth, although your upload bandwidth will suffer.

I'm on Eastlink and I find it a bad day if i can't get over 300 kilobytes per second download. Give eastlink a call, something isn't right with your connection

The issue about cable being a 'shared' medium is old news is not a major factor in speed, if it is a factor at all. It all depends on the infrastructure of the ISP, their capacity and how much they cap your bandwidth. I have Roadrunner cable and they usually cap their speeds at 2000 down/400 up and no matter what time of day you surf/download, speeds and pings are the same. And my whole neighborhood is full of RR users.

This does not seem to be an issue common with cable being shared, that's very very low. Over here (southern CA) I get over 3mb/s on a test at dsl reports, but most servers generally top out at 1mb/s (although sometimes I get an extremely fast connection to some microsoft servers, at least when beta testing certain things).

There has to be something wrong with the service or your lines... Your tests shouldn't be that bad even if you were on a 33.6 kbps modem...

Funny, my DSL ISP plan is 1.5mbits/750kbits. My upload is much faster than cable is in my area although on the same priced cable plan you can get brief sustainable downloads of up to 3-5mbits.

However, it seems to be true in my experience in my area that cable is much more erratic while I ALWAYS get my rated speed. Very consistent my DSL.
