Oh my god, a logical solution to a big problem!

Someone is actually thinking

Instead of tossing the elderly into crappy nursing homes, and charging Medicaid $120 a day, friends and family can get paid $80 a day to care for them in the comfort of their own homes.

Maybe said friends and family aren't "qualified" health care professionals, but considering some of the scum they hire in these nursing homes, I'd still prefer them in the long run. Sometimes being comfortable and happy is more important than simply having your general health strung out as long as it can be.

Well it's usually not an issue of money, most people just don't wanna deal with their senile folks anymore so they dump em in somebody else's lap.

Isn't it sad that people will send their relatives to nursing homes when they don't get anything out of keeping them around, but for $80 a day they'll take care of them?

$80 a day isn't exactly enough to quit your job over.

Doesn't have to be family, it can be friends or neighbors. In the case of the woman in the article, it was someone that used to rent an apartment from her, and they're apparantly very close. Older people tend to know lots of people, there's bound to be someone who's up to the task and could use $1600 a month.

I can't speak for other states, but Oregon and Washington state DHS' have been doing this for years, and usually for A LOT less than $80/day.

Don't know, didn't read it in the article, but it's logical to assume that if you're being paid or compensated in some way then yeah, the state has the right to make sure you're not trying to scam them by doing a crappy job. As is, the state can come into your home/life to inspect how well you take care of your kids, and you don't get paid jack to do that job.

As far as this becoming an issue of greed or something, people don't always have the means or time to help care for their parents. By offering to compensate people the state is merely giving them another option to shuffling their parents into a nursing home and forgetting about them. I know that if my parents had the choice for my grandmother, they would've gladly taken it. As is, they did hire someone to come and live in her house with her for as long as they could, until she got to the point where without 24 hour care she'd wander off and get lost. She was much happier at home than anywhere else, and her health declined a lot faster once she was in a home.

Maybe it's not for everybody, but it's nice to see the option out there, it means that the state is at least admitting that family and friends may be able to do a better job than they can.
