Oh man... more on my Win2k experience... cannot connect two computers, one running Win98 and the other Win2k

I downgraded my LAN to only two computers, one running Win98 and the other one running Win2k. I made sure they share the same workgroup, I made sure they use the same subnet mask and also the right IP's. I have them connected to a 3Com bub which has also connected to it a LinkSys ADLS Router.

I CAN access the router from my Win98 computer but I CANNOT do the same from my Win2k machine

I CANNOT browse the Win98 machine from my Win2k computer; same thing goes the other way.

The hard drives on both machines are SHARED and the file and printer shares are enabled on both.

Any thoughts?

You're not running NTFS on the Win 2K machine are you?

NTFS doesnt matter, my dads win98 box can see my shares fine and all my drives are NTFS. Are you sure you enabled sharing on both machines? and can they even see each other when you go to network neibourhood? can you ping each other?

can you access the computer(ie, share printers, etc)?

I have no problem sharing my win2k machine with the 3 98SE machines in the house...

The win98 machines logon using Windows networking logon, and whatever the logon name is created as a user in my Win2k machine... I leave the password blank.

That way, when any of the 9x machines access my computer, when prompted for a p/w, the user can just hit enter. Works beautifully for me.

I experienced the same problem, or at least a similar one from time to time, RN. My win2k machine could see the 98 machines but could not browse them, while the 98 machines couldn't see the win2k one at all. I got rid of the problem for good, by changing my win2k machine to a standard PC instead of an ACPI compliant one. The LAN card didn't like ACPI for what ever reason. I'm not sure what you mean by the system could not connect to the router. If you have only 2 computers, what's the hub for? Just connect the computers to the switch/router directly.

is the 'guest' user account on your win2k computer enabled? i think win2k disables it by default on installation , and you cant really share anything till you uncheck a little box and enable it.

I got my win98 and win2k machines talking to eachother the first time, didnt have to configure anything, i even have my win2k box sharing its internet connection with any computer on the network.

I've got a similar problem. I haven't changed anything, and now my win2k machine doesn't see the other win98 systems on the network. Likewise it doesn't show up on the win98 systems. I never was able to access from win98, but used to be able to pull files off the other machines with my win2k system.

The strange part is internet sharing still works, (I'm using sygate). I've double checked settings and they all look right. did I miss something? And yes file and print sharing is enabled....

Try installing the NetBeui protocol. Sometimes that helps computers see one another. Are you able to ping each computer though?

Installing NetBeui has helped me when I was trying to share between several NT 4.0 and Win98. Worth trying.

Guys, I cannot ping and I cannot see anything except the computer from which I am actually entering the commands. I found Win98 by far, easier setting up a LAN... I installed NetBeui and all and still nothin'...

Can anyone walk me through the steps? I know it's a lot but I hope to return the favor some day.

actually, a pure win2k networking setup is a lot easier to setup than a 98 networking setup.

Check your cables to see if one of the set happen to be twisted. I had the same problem, and found out after 2 days of fustration that the cables that I order was shiping fkup, one of my cable was a twisted cable and the others was strait.


Ps. Win98 can't Read, Execute & Write (RXW) NTFS files system physically/directly (local machine to local hdd), but able through a Network.
