So I'm helping a neighbor setup a home network. First mistake...anyway, both systems are working off a router using W2K pro. I put them in the same work group and gain visibility to them. The problem is, in order to log into one computer from the other I need to have a viable username and password. Since I didn't build the computers I don't know what the password is for the user "Tony" which exists on both computers. "Tony" is also automatically logged in at startup on both machines. Because I don't know the password I have to change it to something I do know. I did this by opening the properties of my computer, selecting manage and changing the password of the Tony user. No problem...now I can now remotely log into both computers. I go home and the world is good.
The next day my neighbor comes by and says he can't log into either computer at startup using the "Tony" user? What the heck? I can see that the computer is trying to use "Tony" but with the original 4 digit password that I reset the day before...how did that happen? And why does neither the old password nor the new password entered manually work? Any ideas?
