OH JOY!! (Anyone with a Abit VP-6/BP-6 or other MoBo doing Wierd things, step in side!!!) UPDATE!

Well, I've been having LOTS of fun.

For the last month or so, I've been getting all kinds of random lock-ups on my VP-6 Dualie board. I bought this right after they became available, so I've had it for quite awhile and it's worked GREAT, until "The trouble" started, and it all started about the same time I moved to Springfield Or. from Eugene Or. (Faulty electricity??)

Anyway one of the first things I did was pull out all the cards and made sure everything was clean and seated properly. = No Joy
Started playing with the Bios. = No Joy
Driver problem? Tried all differant ver. of differant drivers. = No Joy
IRQ problems? Shuffled the cards every way possable! = No Joy
More Bios tweaking. = No Joy
BAD MEMORY!!! Pulled out all four sticks of memory (Two 256 PC133/Two 128PC133) Bought two 512 PC133 sticks! = No Joy
HAS TO BE A BAD P/S!!!!! Just got back from buying a Antec SL450, installed it and............ = No Joy

PLEASE SHOOT ME!!!!!

SO.....I guess some one in Japan stole some formula for making capacitors but didn't follow the formula correctly and sold a BUNCH of these faulty Caps to Motherboard manufacturing companies including ABIT. link to story I had read about these going bad, but since my Mobo was one of the early ones and had run flawlessly for SO long mine CAN'T be bad, right? Well I guess not. What else is left? I'm sure someone will point out SOME trouble shooting step I failed to list above, but just because it's not listed doesn't mean I didn't try it! I TRIED EVERYTHING!! So now I guess I get to replace 15 bad (or potentionaly bad) caps on my motherboard. I figure not all of them may be bad right now, but if they aren't now, they will be....

If you don't see any Jokes from me for awhile, you'll know I blew it and fux'ored my motherboard!

Wish me LUCK!!

UPDATE!! Well reguardless of what I was told, Radio Shack does NOT carry these Caps. Neither does ANYONE in this whole town!! ARGHHH

SO I ordered some online and now get to deal with this glitchy board for another week or so (more then likely)

Ah, well, a little solder.. a few high quality capacitors, and you'll have a more overclockable, stable board. I'd replace all of the capacitors on any Abit board I buy, really..

Talk about a cowinkydink...

I built a file server for my bro with my old VP-6. And it started locking up on him after a full year of being on 24/7. Then it died and now it wont even POST.

He wants me to "fix" it when I go out there in Jan. If the mobo has gone to pot, I'm in for a fun time. 🙁

I had a new Asus board do that to me. It worked fine for almost a year, on for 24/7, used to just surf the web. One day, it won't boot. And I've switched out everything trying to get it to work.

I've given up on the board. 🙁

How much ya want for it? 😛

Same problem, MSI K7t Pro 2a. Bad capacitor. Bought a new board, w/ slightly better features, for $3x to replace it. Wasn't worth fixing, even though caps are cheap, I'm not good w/ soldering and it'd take too much of my time. But, I could clearly see that one cap had a domed top and another fluid had leaked out (top turned brownish tan and some was down the side).

Was boycotting MSI because of that (and all the similar stories I'd read) but I guess it's pretty widespread now, so, I guess they are back on the list and I'll just have to be prepared to upgrade more often.

BTW, sold the other MBoard on ebay, ended up costing me about $.30 to sell because I underestimated shipping prices (well, really, the post office raised their prices since the last time I'd shipped a package).

your "faulty electricity" comment may have some merit - I was having random lock-ups on two computers until I got an UPS that "filters" the line voltage (evens out the spikes and dips of electricity). A good computer power supply is still dependent on the current coming out of the socket...... If that doesn't help, I'd check the caps.

Good luck 🙂

No, it's the Caps....I looked them over lastnight and several have distorted tops.

here is a link on how to fix the VP-6 for anyone interested. And any other board with faulty caps should under-go the same procedure.

I have a Radio Shack with in walking distance and a nice little Snap-on Butane soldering iron and the day off, so I guess I getta test my skills today!! 😉

My BP6 also has bad caps. I replaced the worst one, but I think I'm still having problems. In particular my voltages are really out of wack.

I think I'll give up on soldering the rest, I'll just use this as an excuse to upgrade.

But this whole situation does really piss me off. There's nothing that pisses me off more than machines that break from things that should have been done right in the first place. :frown:

I was running a BP-6 before I bought the VP and it never gave me any troubles.
I sold it to someone through FS/FT, wasn't YOU was it??😱

Who ever it was, I hope its still working for them!

Wasn't me, sorry man. I'm still using the one I bought in 1999. 😉

Hmmmmmmmm

This makes me think. About two months ago, my Giga-byte 7DX based system started crashing randomly, and now I can't even get Windows installed. Maybe I'll start carefully inspecting the capacitors.

1500uF 6.3v or 10v

Look at the very top of the CAPS, if they are domed, they are TOAST! Also sometimes they will leak brownish liquid..

doh, I was gonna offer to jack some from my school's stock room for you, but the biggest they have is 1000 uF.

Same story here, random HARD freezes. Guess its time to do a little VP-6 surgery here as well.
🙁

BTW, anyone here know how much a decent butane soldering iron is? My electric one doesn't get hot enough.

I got mine from Snap-On. Blue Point Model number YA575 Snap-On

Since it seems there are a few others out there with the same problem, here is a link to how to do the repair.

And here is a link for part numbers and a supplier.

wow i used a bp6 and other abit boards so long i've never heard of this. interesting to know. sold my bp6 on ebay...hope it's till working for that guy.

Well, that's whacky. I wonder if that's why one of the ppga sockets on one of my BP6's stopped working....I'll have to take a closer look at those capacitors. It'd be nice to bring that board back to life!

So far my other, older BP6 and my VP6 are both working ok....

I have two BP6s that needed a little work to be usable. One had a vtt voltage fluctuation problem, which I took care of as shown here. Both had a crappy little 100 uF cap at the EC10 position, which I dealt with as shown here. I used the massive cap from Radio Shack and it looks like a mini-keg hanging off the edge of the board. It's not ideal, but it works okay. The spec is for a 1500 uF just like what you're looking for, and yes, they are hard to find.

OS, if you're having problems with your vtt voltage, look at that first link. My vtt was all over the place, with about a .35 range. After the fix, it was at 1.5 +/- .02, right where it should be. This might help.

The lovely world of the bad capacitor run! It's not just motherboards people. I've had 4 power supplies that are about a year old blow a cap and stop working, 2 of the power supplies took out everything hooked up directly to them when they went (MB, CDROM, HD).
