Fanon is completely correct. It is really stupid to censor the word e-bay. If people want to type e b a y they will just find different ways to type e_bay. What is the point of making everyone think of new and exciting ways to type e~bay? :)

You surely know the reason why EGAY is a no-no ?? Sites have been sued by EGAY for posting direct links to various auctions, bypassing the EGAY advertising. Anand is just protecting his ass (and other vital organs) from blood sucking leaches.

I find it incredibly hard to believe that e-bay would sue anybody for posting links directly to auctions. It just seems like such a stupid thing to sue for. I have seen some rather large and high traffic sites post links directly to e-bay auctions. If e-bay actively searched for links to auctions they could get into a lot of lawsuits. I don't think they would get into the habit of doing that at the risk of bad PR and losing lots of money on lawyer fees if they lost. It would just be really stupid to sue someone for that.
By the way, can you give me any specific links or references to these court cases? I am interested in this.

OK, let me rephrase that. Maybe it isn't hard to believe, it just doesn't seem like a smart thing to do. Besides, if you get some kind of legal threat for something stupid like that, this is the kind of thing where you say, "Screw you. We keep the link, you go away." Then you hope to God they don't sue you and find a large organization, like the EFF, to back you if they do.

It isn't like all webmasters suddenly signed a contract that said they wouldn't allow any links of any kind to e-bay auctions anywhere on their site.

I would still like links to reports of these court cases so I can show them my friends and have something to laugh about. :)

Aboroth,

I don't have any links, its kinda old news now. I remember that some sites were kinda stripping info from EGAY and providing their own info. Even though sellers pay a commission, the companies paying for ads get pissed.

Ok, so companies get mad at e-bay because people are getting around the ads? Ok, that makes sense. But, what doesn't make sense is that e-bay tries to sue people putting up links that get around the ads? Not our (our as in people that don't work for e-bay) fault there are no ads on the auction pages. That's e-bay's problem. Why don't e-bay just put ads on the auction pages? I mean, along with all the horribly designed auctions and completely inappropriate midi files playing in the backgrounds, there's still plenty of space for spam! *gasp* A simple solution.

(ok, so the ads really aren't spam, I guess some people would say it is, but I'm sure you get my point)

They shouldn't get pissy.. they aren't making money off ads as much as they are for the 25-50c to start an auction and the 5% or so they get from the auction price. They should be HAPPY an auction gets more bids

Since there are no auction posts allowed in the for sale forum... I think that keeps people from posting links to their ongoing auctions ???
